This place is wonderful. Joseph, our kitty has been a joy and everyone the staff is protective of the animals they care for. Rightfully so. I love that. They truly care about the fluffy friends they find homes for. As you can see, Joseph is LOVED. He rescued us. <3. The staff at this place is wonderful. . That kind of commitment in a day and age where so many pets are disposed of and euthanized is precious and necessary. Good Job Little Shelter. xx

We recently got a wonderful puppy from here. The overall experience was great the staff are nice people who care. The adoption process was a little slower than we would have liked but it's only because they really care who the animals are going with. Highly recommend also the adoption fee is incredibly reasonable.

Dropped off a stray kitten yesterday that was crying in our bushes. I couldn't keep the cat since im allergic. The manager was rude and acted as if I was committing a crime for dropping of this kitten. The staff was great but the cat manager lady is terrible. She stated she has over 300 cats in the back.... I'm not sure why that is as this is not my area of expertise. To try and save an animal and then be punished is very wrong. I never want a shelter to be shut down because I think it's a great service to protect these innocent animals but get rid of that awful manager. I'd say I would think twice now before saving an animal, but I refuse to let this lady change my morals. Hoping this review can change the next person's experience.

We have adopted all 3 of our fur angels from Little Shelter Animal Rescue and couldnβt feel more blessed to have found them. We knew that from the moment we went there and saw what they do for their animals, we would never go anywhere else. They have a thorough adoption process which I appreciated so much because as an animal lover, Im unfortunately too aware of how many people think they want dogs and end up leaving them homeless again. Our pups all met each other before adopting with the help of one of the caretakers Mike, to make sure it was a good fit. They helped us handle their neutering at the shelter and made sure they were all up to date with their shots before becoming our responsibility. Whenever I had a question in the beginning they were always there for us, AND when one of our dogs got out one day, and I was freaking out, Little Shelter actually sent a team to help me get him back. I know they have also done that for others which says a lot to me. They care so much about every single dog and cat and making sure they find themselves into the best families. David and Tito have become like family to us, and we do what we can to donate supplies or help out when we can. They are a no kill shelter who has helped so many animals find amazing forever homes over the years and at the end of the day, if an animal ends up at little shelter- you know they have the best chance at having a 2nd chance at the life they deserve. We will always support little shelter and look forward to getting another addition to our family one day!

Worst shelter ever! Wish I could give them 0 stars, they denied me the dog because my last dog wasnβt vaccinated, but then they took my money and then denied me the 10 yr old senior dog I was going to adopt. Meanwhile he is just going to sit there, they rather keep this poor senior dog locked up in a cage then let him go to a good home with people who will love him.

I want to thank all of the staff at Little Shelter. I brought home my puppy a few days ago! Fell in love with her at last weekends Petapalooza. Every single staff member was nothing less than professional and kind. Looking out for the best interest of all the animals which is as it should be. I reached out to them my second day home for some advice from there on staff trainer. Which I was advised I could call anytime. He called me back immediately. Listen to my concerns with what I need help with. He then kindly gave me great advice. It is very obvious to any animal lover that the staff at Little Shelter truly cares and loves all the animals. Thank you again. MaryPat

I had adopted a puggle 11years ago from Little Shelter. She was one of the best dogs I ever owned. After she past, I knew eventually I would be checking their website for a new fur baby. My first visit there, they didnβt have any small dogs I would be interested in, so I kept looking. I saw Irwin, now Milo a terrier mix, but he looked large in the photo. He did have a cute face, so I stopped by. He was a lot smaller in person. His cute face and situation sucked me in. Never make a decision on just a photo. You need to see the dog. The people there are nice and helpful. Within 15 minutes or so I knew I wanted him and put a hold on the little guy. Iβve had him about 6 days now and he is adjusting nicely. He was in a hoarding situation so this is a totally new environment for him. Each day he seems to get better and better. They give you a little bag of goodies too when you pick up your new friend. So if your asking yourself if you should check this place out, the answer is yes. The people that work at Little Shelter will help you to find your fur baby!

For anyone out there that ever thought of adopting an older pet, don't hesitate one more minute. We are the happy family of 4 wonderful dogs. Our first experience with Little Shelter was in June of 2020 when we adopted our little Morty, a 15 year-old teacup poodle who was blind and had no teeth. He was a little guy with a BIG heart and a BIG personality! Morty came everywhere with us, traveling in style in his little pink stroller, with a bowl full of baby Goldfish as a snack! The day we adopted Morty we brought our 3 other pups to meet him at Little Shelter, and he fit right into our little pack. From that day forward, Morty became the most wonderful addition to our family of humans and puppies! Unfortunately our little Morty passed away in April of 2021. We felt some things we had acquired for Morty could be helpful to Little Shelter and the puppies there waiting for a home. We decided to bring some donations to Little Shelter, but prior to going that day, we had come across the picture of another little guy looking for a home on the Little Shelter website. When dropping off our donations, we inquired about this little guy, who went by Oscar at Little Shelter. In the blink of an eye, Oscar became a member of our family, and now goes by Charlie! Little Shelter had told us that Oscar was being passed over again and again for a home, and that he was blind and hard of hearing. Upon bringing him home, we discovered he also had no teeth! A sign from our Little Morty that Oscar was meant to be ours. Both Morty and Charlie have brought so much happiness and love to our family of 6 humans and 4 dogs. Going forward, our family will return to Little Shelter to bring home other furry senior citizens. They are the most wonderful addition to a family, with so much love to give, and in need of so much love and kindness themselves. What's better than bringing a senior pet into your home and making him/her feel comfortable, happy and loved for the rest of his/her life? For our family, we feel there is nothing better. For anyone out there thinking about adopting a pet, please don't overlook senior pets, and please don't be scared off by their age. They are all young at heart and need a family to love and care for them.

We adopted 2 adult cats from Little Shelter Tequila in 2019, and Francesca (now Bailey) in 2023. Both are doing great, the adoption process was easy with no issues. We highly recommend Little Shelter!!

Little Shelter is amazing! Adopted 2 dogs in the past year and a half, Seamus and Mia. Staff is great and helpful! They go above and beyond to make sure your new fur baby transitions into their new fur ever home. I always recommend them to family, friends and coworkers!

We recently rescued a dog from this shelter and the experience was harrowing thanks to the "manager" Janet. Not only is her demeanor rude, accusatory and toxic to say the least, but she has no finesse in speaking with human beings at all. Poor animals that are exposed to her presence & cannot fend for themselves!!! If you are not a fluent English speaker DO NOT GO TO THIS SHELTER UNLESS YOU HAVE PROPER TRANSLATION SERVICES. YOU WILL NOT BE APPRECIATED THERE!!! Based on my interaction with Janet & receiving such an inappropriate treatment, my only impression & question is whether this person is a racist & bigot! I now understand why this place has only a 3.5 star rating. The response to my review from the "owner" is obviously not from someone present or around during the conversation or they would not have even had the nerve to respond. The details included therein are just plain & simply erroneous and confabulated. βDisgustingβ was never used and βblack & brownβ peopleβ¦enough said.

I had the most wonderful experience at The Little Shelter. We adopted 1 1/2 year old Tammy who was terrified to be in our home at first but now is the princess of the house. The Little Shelter went above an beyond to make sure that Tammy was well taken care of. I appreciate all that they do to take care of the animals in the shelter and all that they do to make sure that they are going to good homes.

Little Shelter is the best shelter on Long Island. They rescue so many wonderful dogs and cats. Itβs amazing! Iβve been volunteering here for 20 yrs and everyone is so dedicated to the well- being of these animals. The staff go above and beyond to make sure theyβre all well taken care of. They have their best interest at heart and just want to find the right home for every animal there. I never write reviews but Itβs sad to see some of the negative ones because they do the best they can and itβs a very difficult environment to be in every day on top of not being paid well. They do it because they love the animals so please be kind and donβt take it personally. Itβs heartbreaking to see what these abused and abandoned animals have been through and it can take a toll on a lot of people so donβt let some of these reviews deter anyone from adopting their best friend here.

This is an incredible shelter, the dogs and cats are very well taken care of and very much loved. We adopted our little Bojack in January of 2024 and we just love him so very, very much. If you are looking for unconditional love, you will find it at the Little Shelter.ππππ

This is Lenny, a sweet, loveable boy with a tough background. He's two years old and grew up in a hoarding situation so that means minimal human contact and no time outside resulting in an anxious dog who needs patience and continued training. This is what Little Shelter does, they rescue dogs which may come with a lot of baggage and train them for weeks or months and then help train their humans too! Little Shelter and their staff put the dogs first and want to make sure the dog is a good fit for you and more importantly, that you are a good fit for the dog. Our adoption process took some time but I'm so glad it did. We were able to work with numerous employees who gave us tips and tricks and trained us to properly train our dog! We received nothing but support, encouragement and guidance from the staff and couldn't be happier with this addition to our family!

Really not happy at all, but the level of disrespect that I had from a supposedly front end manager and one of the workers there that was sitting behind the desk I do understand if my dogs are not neutered and I wouldnβt be able to adopt a dog that was their policy there. The only problem I had was The total disrespect of both employees rolling their eyes in back of their heads as well as lying to me about their names, especially the manager they are with the blonde hair youβre not in high school playing games with people Iβve donated to this animal, shelter, blankets, closed toys, etc. And today I felt very disrespected!! Hopefully, I find out whoβs running this place and make sure I get my point across

Little Shelter is a great place where amazingly compassionate people work hard to find forever homes for vulnerable animals. Our experience adopting from LS was wonderful! Janet, Frank, Dan and everyone else we met were awesome and they made sure we got the right pet for our family, and more importantly, that we were the right family for our sweet Linus π

We had a great experience and appreciate the kindness of all the staff. The process of adoption went smoothly and we are very happy with our dog :)

I speak as someone who has adopted from here, this place is great and their dogs are great. All the negative reviews are from people that were denied adoption. I have yet to see one about someone who has adopted. That tells me that this place cares about the dogs and not some Karen's feeling, I see this a net benefit when adopting a dog from Little Shelter. I too didn't find the front desk very friendly to humans, but they take great care of the dogs. this is not a place you go for customer service, this is a place you go to agree to care for a living being. The complaints are from people that think this is some retail store for their benefit. You should adopt from here and if not at least donate!

I adopted Cerina on Thursday 22 of February. Our first night together was such a comfort for us both, as I had lost my last of 3 dogs I had adopted together several years ago and for Cerina who had been in Little Shelter and another one for almost 4 years. Cerina and I have benefited from the comfort and love we are providing to each other. Little Shelter and the staff have been so dedicated to providing amazing care, kindness, love and support for all the animals, but they have gone above and beyond their capacity to make sure all the animals are well taken care of. It was so apparent as a testimony to making sure all animals are treated with respect, care and dedication.

I adopted Princess, an adorable 9 year old female toy poodle. Sheβs so sweet and gets along great with Teddy, our 9 yr old poodle bichon. Little Shelter gives all their dogs amazing love and care and does their best to find the best home for every dog. Thank you Little Shelterβ€οΈ

Went to a local town animal shelter and was interested in adopting this cute small dog . I put in an application was told a few days later that the dog was no longer available. In searching around I see the same dog on the little shelter website. I went down and sure enough it was the same dog ! Here's the catch ..... now that it was at the little shelter ( a week later ) the adoption fee was 10x the fee of the town shelter. So I called back my local shelter and got an employee on the phone who reluctantly admitted that the little shelter comes in often and picks out the cute small dogs and takes them to their rescue. wow talk about a revenue stream ! before LS replies , i already know that my local town shelter does not euthanize dogs !!!

Friendly workers. Cats were amazing. 1 star , cant express on why for security reasons. This place really disappointed me and wasted my time. I recommend you rescue an actual cat/kitten IN NEED. If not , then go to another shelter/adoption center. This place seems to want to keep their cats instead of giving them a lovable home with owners to care for them at all time. Please don't reply @LittleShelter, i do not need to see the careless comment you have to leave.

We had gotten ace at 10 weeks old and he couldnβt have been a better fit for our family, the people that helped us figure out who would fit us best did a great job, we had been shown a couple of dogs out of what we picked and all were very sweet and lovable but something about this little lab mix Ace just had me and my father so attracted from the moment they picked him up over the counter in the office! Thank you guys so much for giving us the missing part in our family!

We adopted our second cat from Little Shelter and couldn't have had a better experience. The cat team is full of knowledgeable, helpful and super nice people. They helped us make the best choice for our family and never pressured us to make a decision. We could tell that Sue and her team adored our kitten as much as we did and her love was contagious! The place is clean and beautiful and fun to visit. I won't go anywhere else for a pet!Thank you Sue and team!!!

Went there today with the thoughts of rescuing a dog. I have rescued dogs in the past and have lots of experience with dogs. I have three now . The girl working there today was rude , and made me feel like she was doing me a favor . I asked about the dogs history and she said β we have no idea β. I said well can u at least let me know how u acquired him . She was very rude and when they were handing out personalities she was on the wrong line . I left there feeling like a criminal

I brought both my cats to be fixed on such short notice and my poor girl kept getting pregnant this establishment was amazing took great care of both of my fur babies, kept me updated not only that but since my baby girl has been spayed sheβs been 10xs healthier and able to give her nutrients to herself. theyβre very welcoming at this place of work When you walk in thereβs so many beautiful cats youβll want to take them all home i would love there if I could :) moral of it the staff and care given for your animals here is a 10/10

Best shelter. The volunteers are friendly, committed, down to earth. It is no kill and the events are so much fun: Anna and Raven, petapalooza, and many community outreach events all year long.

I was excited to go and rescue a dog. I have been a loving dog owner for 12 years. It turns out that they wouldn't consider me due to not having my last dog fixed. I couldn't believe it. I even asked if I promise to have the dog fixed as a condition to adoption, if they would consider me. The answer was no way. In fact, all the dogs are already fixed. Well, they have inspired me to buy a dog. I would have given any dog a great home. I was also considering a donation. I just feel bad for the dog in light of the shelters ridiculous policy.

Totally unsatisfied with this facility. We were interested in adopting 2 young cats, Raven and Spidey. In being truthful, we brought in our dog at their request to be interviewed and did not appreciate the fact that she was put in rooms with so many cats rather than just the two we were interested in. This made my dog over excited and very nervous. They made a judgement call and decided we werenβt good enough for the adoption. I would NOT recommend this place to my worst enemy. I was very disappointed in the process of how they introduced my dog to so many different cats for no reason.

Last week I adopted the love of my life. I canβt express how amazing and kind everyone at shelter are. His name is Goose and heβs a special one. They LITERLY saved his life in the nick of time. From the moment I seen him I knew he was the one. These people have such a love for all the animals they rescue. The level of care they have is unmatched. They took such good care and had patience with him they made sure to adopt to the right home. Their shelter is clean, warm and has beautiful meet and greet areas where it felt like we were hanging out at a park rather then a cold shelter. They are just so nice everyone of them. When we came back for an adoption event they all made him feel like a little celebrity β€οΈ

After my last dog crossed that rainbow bridge I told myself I would never be able to adopt another dog again. A few months later I told myself I was just going to look - the staff was absolutely amazing, helped me threw the whole process. They introduced me to the puppy I adopted and told me all about her as well as her momma and siblings and within 30 minutes I was in love. After all the paperwork was signed I Heard back from them by the end of the day and had my little lady on her way home the next day. I couldnβt have been happier with my choice in shelter or pup.

We found our best friend there! He was a senior dog, and I was reluctant to adopt a senior, especially since we had 2 small kids. But it was one of the best decisions we ever made. He was so calm with the littles (no crazy puppy energy), already well trained and easy to teach more, and just the sweetest mush of a dog. Adopting a senior was such a wonderful experience and we'll absolutely do it again, especially from Little Shelter!

We had a wonderful experience at Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoption Center. My family and I were no longer able to care for our dog and after careful research we decided to take him to little Shelter. We were greeted at the door by Dominick Dolce who walked us through every step of the process with updates. Although saddened about the circumstances that led to our decision, we were happy to know that our dog found a second loving family. I would highly recommend!! Thank you!

We decided to adopt a dog rather than buy one at a pet store when we heard how full all the local shelters were with abandoned and abused dogs. We adopted "Teddy" with the help of the good people of Little Shelter. They clearly love animals and take great strides to make sure they are placed in the right homes. They walked us through the process. They were kind and professional. They made sure we were informed and that the match was right. They called our references and did a thorough check to insure the fit was right. Teddy was well cared for. He was medically supervised and the run down on his temperament was spot on. I will be donating to support their mission and looking to them in the future.

A cat was found in my neighborhood. I took the cat to my local vet because the cat had a hole in its side. The vet scanned the cat for a microchip. The cat had a microchip and the microchip came back to Little Shelter as per the microchip company. My vet called little shelter and was told that the cat didnβt belong to them that it was from a clinic they held. I called Little Shelter and spoke to a very rude woman that said my vet never called. To make a long story short - I called and left several messages on multiple extensions with no call back. Two months later I brought the cat into my vet and paid for the surgery. I spoke to Diana the days the cat was at the hospital and was told she would take the cat but would not be able to commit to getting me reimbursed. She said she would reach out to the executive director to see if they would be able to help with the bill. Spoke to Diana today and was told that she spoke to the executive director and was told they would not take any responsibility for the bill.Little Shelter has been in existence for almost 100 years and I think itβs disgraceful that they abandoned a cat that is registered to βLittle Shelterβ. If anyone had called me back I would have gladly had them pick up the cat. Once the cat was at the veterinarian I felt I should do the right thing for the cat. I would never abandon an animal that was under my name andthink the general public should know the way this shelter operates. I did rescue for over 30 years and would never abandon an animal that was registered to me. As a matter of fact, I didnβt allow microchips to be changed to the new owners name. It was the only way I could know if one of my rescues was abandoned.

They helped me adopt my first cat, and made sure I was well prepared to take care of her.Adele, now jβnara, is happy, healthy, and as cuddly as ever

After multiple applications at several other rescue places, I had decided to try one last time before taking a break at looking. And I am so glad I did! Kacie came into our lives and she has opened up and blossomed so much. Sheβs adorable, shy and fun. She is just pure love and joy. Thank you to Little Shelter for bringing us together and for giving us all the necessary info. we needed to make this work. Kacie is our first rescue but definitely will not be our last!

Went to this place with family to look for a puppy in hopes of having an easy process. The guy who helped us was very nice and told us the process would be easy. Apparently little shelter has never heard of divorced parents and a split householdπΉπΉ. So after putting down $25 for a hold and assuming we would get the dog (which should have been a definite considering my mother explained she works at a dog kennel for a living) We instead got a call by the front desk lady calling us liars, stating that we canβt be trusted to care for a dog, and then ended the call by saying βyouβve been a waste of my timeβ and hung up abruptly as we were mid sentence. There was not a single reason in my mind as to why we couldnβt get the dog. What is the point of making a person spend $25 and giving them this false sense of hope just to get a rude nasty call telling you that youβre unfit to care for an animal. Itβs disgusting and completely unnecessary. Definitely read the one star reviews because each and every one of them continues along the same story line as mine. P.S the ladies name is Janet Needle

We just recently adopted a dog from Little Shelter and I have to say we honestly had a great experience. We went and look at the dogs. It was towards closing but they were still polite. They brought the dog out and we talked. We came back again days later and took the same dog for a walk. We truly bonded with the dog in just that short time. After reading the dog's history. We filled out the application and put the $25 dollars down for the 24 hour hold. We were then told that the dog would need medication for the rest of his life. We thought it would have been nice to know BEFORE we started the application or even have it included in the history, that's why the 4 stars, however, we were called to pick up our new family member the next day. This dog is very bright and he fits in very well in our home. However, he is a little aggressive towards other animals when we go out for walks but he's getting better and we're going for training.Lastly, it seemed as if everyone wanted to see what type of family we were because almost the whole staff was waiting for us when we came to finalize the adoption. I would definitely recommend Little Shelter in the future.

Let me start by saying I have adopted all my furry companions (2 dogs, now 3/ 1kitten) from little shelter since I moved to the area 26 years ago. Unfortunately I recently had to say goodbye to my 2nd dog after 14 years.. naturally we went to little shelter first. And we ended up adopting a very shy little girl (5months) rescue from PR. I personally admire and understand the vetting process. Itβs not a big deal. But in particular Iβm so thankful for the sit down n practical advice I was given. BECAUSE my dog got out 1 week later! I remember the advice. CALL the shelter immediately! Donβt be embarrassed. They came on a Sunday right after I called. And found my dog an hour later. They are a great shelter and really care about all their babies. Great operation top to bottom! Thank you Thank you! Remember if your dog escapes call them and all the shelters nearby! Love Little Shelter. Thank you again!

I have now adopted three dogs from Little Shelter with the first being 26 years ago. The most recent two only five days ago. I have found that just like 26 years ago, the staff are fully invested in the animals welfare. They are loving and caring with the pets. They have a very good adoption process which will see that the pet goes to a good home. I highly recommend going to meet the pets at Little Shelter if you are interested in providing a forever home to an animal in need.

I just adopted a dog from this shelter and I have to say, it was the best experience I have ever had at an animal shelter. The staff was extremely kind and informative and went out of their way to match me with the right dog. They take very good care of the animals in their shelter and believe me, I went out of my way to look things over. My little friend is so much fun and we are getting along quite nicely. Eddie and I are doing GREAT.!!! I'm so grateful for the folks there at Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoption Center. (Eddie is doing very well and we are both going to training lessons together). He is turning into a Special Friend for me.

Little Shelter is an amazing rescue group of extremely loving, knowledgeable, and caring people. I have adopted 3 senior dogs, and they where all well cared for before being ready to adopt. The staff truly loves all the dogs that come through there and are always excited to hear updates, see pics, and get visits from the doggies i have adopted from them. The adoption process was great, went smoothly and everyone was kind and helpful. I love this place! And love our rescues!

I adopted my dog from Little shelter, they walked me through the process, were very helpful, giving me as much background information that I needed to understand what my dog had been through prior to coming to Little Shelter. It helped me to understand some of the behaviors he was demonstrating. I am very grateful to Little Shelter and all the volunteers that make it possible to help all the animals that they rescue, and find good homes for them. Thank you Little Shelter for my Buddy, (aka Brooklyn). He is my heart.

We adopted a senior dog at Little Shelter and had the most amazing experience. Mike was patient during the dog interactions, and John was so kind with us. We have nothing but positive things to say about Little Shelter - this shelter is truly a sanctuary and the staff does an amazing job with potential adopters!! We are so thrilled to have welcomed little Louis to our family! Thank you Little Shelter!

We adopted two kittens from Little Shelter. LS has the best selection, allowing you to play with and learn about their characters before adopting. The Shelter staff takes excellent care of the animals, growing to know each one. Highly recommend LS for kittens.

I've adopted several dogs from this shelter and I've been thankful for everyday I've taken home from this wonderful shelter they really care about the pets in their possession

We adopted a 1.5 year old cat from Little shelter recently. Our experience was fantastic. This is our second adoption from them and can not be more pleased with the professional courtesy and knowledgeable staff we dealt with. Little Shelter staff called me a few times to see how my sweet little "cookie dough" is doing and have been very helpful responding to my questions and concerns.Keep up the great work and care you provide to so many unfortunate animals needing a comforting home.

We were lucky enough to come across our crazy Luna at an adoption event and since then she has brought so much love into our home. It was so comforting to see how dedicated and passionate the staff were about their rescues and finding them the right home. They kept great communication and helped us every step of the way with all our questions and concerns. Thank you Little Shelter β€οΈ

I've adopted 2 dogs from this shelter. The first in 2003. She turned out to be the love of my life. After 13 yrs I had to send her to heaven, & 2 weeks later I adopted a senior boy. Have had him almost 5 months & he's a cutie too. I never had any problems with the adoption process or the staff. They will make sure your potential pet gets along with other pets you may have, or they let you know if your potential pet needs to be the only one. My senior boy had medical issues which were all taken care of, & his follow-up care was free. I plan on getting another dog from them. And kudos to them for saving 10 dogs that would have been slaughtered in Korea. Maybe one of them is meant to come live a great life with me. I highly recommend adopting from them.

Came into this place wanting to adopt a puppy. fell in love with one of them. lady said i had to put a down payment of 25$????? then she will see if the dog is right for us LOL! She would not give me my 25$ back because she decided some how the dog wasnβt right for me? She is a very nasty person told me that she wouldnβt give the 25$ back and hung the phone up. very unprofessional. she told me if we donβt want the puppy anymore then that money goes to the dogs or something but yet she told me the dog isnβt good for me. so i should be able to get my money back. donβt trust these scammers

I went to look at the dogs there. The staff was nice and friendly however they did ask questions of kids ages at home and if my partner is aware I'm thinking of adopting. I realized the woman was not being nosy but just trying to make sure I was aware of the difficulties of adoption. It seems they get a lot of people who don't realize the commitment involved. It is nice they are being protective of the pets. I didn't adopt yet but I did enjoy meeting a few furry friends. I'll return soon to see if i click with anyone :).

Volunteers at the front desk are inappropraiate. It was a young female and a young male. The female was talking about breast (she used the word t*ts) inappropriateley which de-railed me from even wanting to get a cat here as I was filling out the application. My fiance was filling out the application and he didn't put how many people were in the household and he didn't know how many there were of us on the top of his head and she interjected "you don't know?" obnoxiusly. I was in disbelief how the volunteers are here. I saw other reviews and the response from this adoption center is appauling. They gaslight the families that want to come here to adopt. We left within 10-15 minutes of our visit here. I'd recommend to go to Golden Paw Society or elsewhere. There are much friendlier volunteers for the cats there. I would also like to add on that the volunteer that took our application let it get wet in the rain as we were walking to see the cats.Updated: The shelter replied back to my comment and Iβm absolutely shocked in the gaslighting in their reply. Iβm not dumb, I know what shelter Iβm reviewing and it is indeed Little Shelter. Instead of defending yourselves maybe you can apologize for the lack of respect at this shelter. I do not believe that this place is POC friendly with the way they treated us and maybe youβre right I think the animals in this shelter deserve better, these poor animals have volunteers who DO NOT want people to adopt.
Kate Alter
These people do not care for animals in any way and have no customer service. They screwed my sister and her boyfriend over after telling them the dog they had on hold was going to be picked up.My sister told her how heartbroken she was to not get the dog after making a connection with her and being led to believe it was her dog and she responded β I assure you we will find someone else to bring her home by the end of the weekβ. For the sake of being a decent human being please find another place to adopt an animal from because donβt worry β they will find someone else to adopt themβ.

Very disappointed in this shelter. I was discriminated because I have mental illness and needed emotional support dog. Didnβt need to be trained to do anything special. I am home 24 hours a day 7 days a week and wanted a special companion to spend my time with and to help with my depression and anxiety. I came to this shelter because I had adopted when I was younger from here as well as other family members adopting. We have donated food and blankets and towels tons of times. So much for them wanting their dogs to be placed in loving home. They wouldnβt even let us walk through because they werenβt going to let me adopt so they look at it as pointless. will be sure to tell all my family and friends not to adopt from them. I will also be sure to bring my donations elsewhere

Autism discrimination anyone? My family, which consists of twin 9 year old boys who are non-verbal autistic went to pick out a dog. Weβve always been a dog family and our oldest just passed a little over a month ago. When we got to the shelter, a younger worker behind the counter saw the boysβ¦ one of which was tilting his head to the side and holding his other ear because surprise barks startle him. Rather than inviting my family to the back, she said βwhy donβt you wait outside and Iβll bring a couple dogs out.βBut i nstead of her coming out with any dogs, an older woman came out with a quite visible confrontational demeanor and said βare you here to see some dogs?βMy wife replied βyesβThe woman then said βwell are your children interested in dogs?βMy wife replied βIβm not sure I understandβ to which the lady replied βthey donβt seem interested in dogs.βMy wife replied βthey are special needs, so they really wonβt show interest if we ask them.βThe lady then said βwell if they arenβt interested, we wonβt approve adoptions, so you can leave.βMy wife had to pack up 2 crying boys who thought they were going to see dogs. We were discriminated against by this shelter and formal complaints are starting to be made.I just wanted to let everyone know how this shelter behaves. And the other reviews I just read are true. They are discriminatory, judgmental, and actually very rude.I hope karma comes around for them. They donβt deserve to be in business and the dogs deserve better advocates.Just for contextβ¦ we are a dog family and always have been. Weβve had 2 dogs for longer than weβve had our twins. And yes, weβll go someplace else, but that doesnβt forgive discrimination.

This shelter is absolutely wonderful! they put so much thought and time into ensuring the animals have a safe home to come to and it truly warms my price. I will be suggesting this shelter to all my friends who are looking to adopt a dog. Much more personal and intimate then town shelters which was such a nice change. Grateful i ended up here because now I have my new fur-bestfriend!!!!!

I recently began volunteering at Little Shelter. I am absolutely impressed with the dedication and care provided by the staff and volunteers at this facility. I have two rescue dogs of my own and this facility is one of the best I have seen. There is a genuine sense of love of the animals there. The facilities are top notch and every animal is given everything they need to thrive and to be ready for adoption. They receive ongoing medical care, socialization by the staff and volunteers, sweaters when the weather turns cold and an occasional trip to an adoption event to potentially meet their new family . I have also noticed that the adoption process is predicated solely on what is best for the animal and the family adopting it. If you intend to make a dog or cat a family member I highly recommend you make a visit to The Little Shelter.Carlo S.

We've visited this shelter twice now. In both instances, the staff were amazing - polite, knowledgeable, and very obviously invested in the work they are doing here. The animals were very well taken care of and cared for.Update: we wound up adopting some pups from them. Their staff was terrific. They were really accommodating and helped us through the adoption process. We are very impressed with them.

I'm shocked that anyone would write a review that the staff was "pushy" I had a great experience there! and i feel what this shelter does is amazing and life changing. I'd like to replace "pushy" with "passionate" because trying hard to find an animal a home should not be taken as forceful It's called working hard to ensure a good life for them. They all seem very well taken care of...the staff was great and friendly and certainly all pets there deserve a good home. I Would recommend checking it out to bring home your new best friend. Adopt don't shop!

This was my first time adopting from a shelter, so when I was informed that they had gotten a litter of puppies that I was interested in adopting, I called and made an appt to see puppy. And although it was along process and steps that was taken to get adoption finalized, it was worth it. I adopted my self a beautiful puppy that was spayed, microchipped, dewormed, and almost fully vaccinated. The staff was great, the animals are cared for and loved. At the end of it all I was very happy with the process and care that staff go through to ensure all these animals get a good home. Thank you Little Shelter you have a client for life.

I've been dealing with Little Shelter for years. Every time they seemed nice But I guess that because I was looking to adopt. But this time I called and asked about bringing a puppy there. The lady was EXTREMELY RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL. I was merely asking her my options. She told me they would not take anymore dogs and basically it's not their problem. Mind you the puppy is 3 months old up to date shots, spaded, and has a great temperament. We can't keep her because we are moving out of state and into a smaller home. She told me to take the dog back to where I got her and basically stop calling ( thanks for the advice Lady but don't you think if I could do that I would have already). I will never recommend Little Shelter again because of how rude she spoke to me in the 3 minute span.

Little Shelter is a great place to adopt on Long Island. I have been adopting animals here since I was a young child. The staff and volunteers are helpful and hard working. They are certain to make sure each dog/cat goes to a loving home and they should due to the news always reporting abused/neglected animals. The Cattery is very neat and clean. You can tell how loving the staff is because the cats are so affectionate. It is amazing how many cats are in the Cattery and how they provide for each one.

Little Shelter is the best animal adoption center I have ever seen. Their staff is extremely knowledgeable about each and every animal they have on site, and what those individual animals' circumstances are. The grounds are immaculate and you can just tell that so much love, time and attention is paid to the shelter and the animals that it adopts. The care of the animals is affectionate, warm and positive.I would highly recommend Little Shelter to any individual that is looking to adopt an animal. There are not enough positive words that can be said about this organization and its staff and grounds.Bravo Little Shelter for being amazing!

Little shelter is an amazing rescue and adoption center. Theyβre very caring for the pets and truly care about potential pet parents and matching them for a forever home. I highly recommend little shelter. The staff was extremely helpful in deciding which furbaby was right for me!

I adopted Stella (formally named Roxie) from Little Shelter 2 years ago. She is the perfect little angel and escape artist. She remains to be 100% healthy and I am delighted with the staff and the facility. Stella lives with her 17 year old pug step-brother( BOO) and the 2 are wonderfully delicious fur children. When it is Boo's time, I certainly will return to Little Shelter . I often visit and attend events just to feel the love . She is depicted here as a cheerleader for Halloween. I uploaded a photo but it does not show on the review

Terrific shelter! Animals are very well cared for while in Little Shelter. Adoption process is a bit lengthy, but it makes sense to ensure the animals don't become homeless again and are in appropriate homes. Upon adopting from Little Shelter, the first vet check up is free with an outside vet. The cats have free reign of the cattery making them socialized already and making it easier when coming home with the cat. Love Little Shelter and it's the only place I'd adopt from!!

We adopted a dog in November 2022. After taking the dog to the vet 2 weeks after receiving him. We found out that he was older and a lot sicker then what the animal shelter had told. We thought the dog would be a perfect fit for the family despite his minor medical condition which we were told. Today April 2nd less than 6 months we had to burry him. After multiple vets visits and medication. Our dog had severe CHF and was basically living on comfort care for the last 3 months. Do not adopt a dog from here. The dog are sicker and older then they disclose. This was completely heart breaking for my family. R.I.P prince. π’In response to your message you left . YOU KNEW. I was told he had a heart murmur I even agreed to take him knowing he was on 3 meds a day. He was alot sicker then you disclosed. He had CHF and died in less then 6 months aft multiple vet visits.

I have adopted 2 wonderful dogs from Little Shelter . I was impressed how the staff works with the family to select the right one for your lifestyle . I applaud the shelter for lovingly caring for animals who may not be adopted .I definitely recommend Little Shelter for anyone looking to adopt an animal .

Visited Friday then again Saturday so my wife could meet our new forever three year old. Staff was outstanding and we only waited minutes for a staff member to bring the dog we wanted to us. Afterwards a gentleman came to us and told us we could leave and they would be contacting us within a few days after calling several references. It was very heart warming to see so many people young and old wanting to adopt these beautiful dogs that need forever home!

Hey so I went to this place today with my 2 boys to adopt a dog Wether it was old or sick just to give it a good life I have a big home with a big yard and also have another dog that would love a friend so I go and fill the info form as requested after the girl read it she saw my dog is not neutered .so she said they have a policy not to give dogs to places we're there's not neutered dogs. I ask why and she said so they don't make babies. Ok so no problem I said I will adopt a male dog ! So that's when logic left the room because she said I still can't. I asked why but there was no answer. So pls someone tell me were is the brains and logic in this place?? Why would stupidity stop you from giving a caged dog a good home?? Any logical answer? Ok everyone i got a response Of course the response I got is stupid so i ask again Can 2 male dogs have babies??

as a dog owner i really do know when i meet people who are genuinely interested into changing a dogs life and getting them a better life situation. every worker there from kennel workers to the adoption counselors to the mangers to the trainers are all very lovely and know what they are doing , their buisness has been around for more then 90 years and that clearly means something as well , if your looking to change a dogs life and willing to go through their process of adoptions you will get your forever fur babyβ€οΈ

we adopted our pup from little shelter a little over a year ago. they were thorough, courteous, and very helpful. gypsy came to us in good health and the friendly staff was so excited to have found her a good home. they were also very accommodating the few times we called with questions after she came home with us. I would highly recommend them to friends and family.

This shelter is well maintained and the animals seem well taken care of but the people in charge ultimately do not have the animalβs best interests in mind. I went in multiple times looking to adopt and got runarounds from different people that work there on their policies. Ultimately I was told that because I am not a home owner I am not allowed to interact with any of the dogs or pet any of them that I intend to adopt until I had the home owners (my parents) present. I am over the age of 21, and Iβm allowed to adopt and give them money for the dog, but I canβt pet potential adoptions before inconveniencing my familyβs busy schedule to drive an hour out of their way to speak in person to them? This shelterβs policy, and customer service, are both awful. The man I spoke with on the phone and in person, I believe named David, is unbelieveably rude and disrespectful. He was not at all interested in having a civil conversation with me about adopting a dog so my current dog can have a friend at home. Again, the shelter itself is beautiful, but the people that work there do not seem to be eager to find the animals good homes and are very rude. It makes you not want to adopt from them and give them money. It should be all about the animals, and for this place it is not. It really is a shame.

My pet had just passed on a little while before i went to Little Shelter. My daughter went , just to look because the house was so quiet and we missed our girl. The people who were there helped us try to find what we were looking for, then this little hairy dog popped up onto the gate as if to say "Here I am". It was love at first sight for both he, and my daughter and I. I had no problem with the adoption process and he has a chip and he knows how to open the gate with his paw and wiggle through. I actually had little shelter call me, because a neighbor had picked him up and he still had the little shelter tag on. He is the happiest little dog i ever met. The shelter is clean, with grass to run around in and workers were very helpful!!!!!

I am disgusted in this shelter. I adopted a kitten from here and everything was fine till I brought her home. As soon as I did she got extremely sick as wouldnβt eat or drink. Upon adoption I was told that if there was any issues with her, I could call back immediately and they would help accommodate for the process of getting a vet treatment and antibiotics for her. When I tried to contact the shelter, they did not answer a single phone call on a Friday after I tried reaching them over 10 times and left numerous voice messages. When I finally get in contact with them they are rude and tell me to come drive back 45 minutes to them to drop off my new family cat to leave them in a dirty shelter again for another few days when that is completely out of my schedule. I told them Iβd be contacting them again within 10 minutes of the first phone call in which I finally receive an answer, and they continue to ignore their phone. What kind of staff do they have managing this place? Itβs truly disgraceful to be in charge of innocent animals lives and this is the way they conduct themselves. If I had known this was the situation Iβd be presented with when I adopted my cat, I would have looked elsewhere.

I had a bad experience at little shelter and will never try to adopt nor send them a donation ever. This happened close to 10 years ago but still bothers me. I went to the shelter attempting to adopt 1 or 2 cats or kittens. After seeing all the beautiful felines waiting for a home I happily selected two. After filling out a ton of paperwork, I was told that because I rent they would need to speak to the landlord. I live in a large complex and I said I doubted anyone would call back regarding the adoption of a cat. I offered to show them a copy of my lease specifically stating that cats but not dogs were welcome. I also offered to show them the website of the complex saying cats were permitted. They were totally unreasonable and said I couldn't adopt unless they spoke to the leasing company. fortunately my story has a happy ending. I adopted the two best cats in the world from a shelter in Port Jeff. I want to add that at the time I was 40 years old, not some kid. Why would I possibly adopt a cats knowing that I might have to return them. Ridiculous!

I got my Labrador from Little Shelter, and he is the most wonderful dog. All the dogs there are so well cared for and happy. The staff is polite and helpful. I love my boy so much and when I am ready to add to my pet family, I will definitely be returning to Little Shelter!
Bethany Stuart
I really enjoyed the space they had there, however, the volunteers were quite rude and left feeling worse about the place then when I first arrived. I understand they have a tough screening process to make sure all animals went to good homes, but when I told them I was 18 and would be the youngest in the household where my roommates were interested in getting a cat (they are both 26) they said animals could not be gifted, even though they were living with me this would not have been a gift. After this, the staff rushed me through the rest of the tour and then showed me to the exit.

They had my daughter so excited to adopt but since her last pet was in Jamaica, West Indies and it took a5 days to get it from her mother due to bad weather over there and lack of access to Wi-FI they stole my daughters joy!!! They act as if they donβt WANT you to adopt or maybe it was how we lookedβ¦ very invasive and sure to point out that the deposit is not refundable,βno matter what happensβ, scammers. DO NOT TAKE YOUR LITTLE ONE THEREβ¦ THESE OLD WOMEN BREAK HEARTS

Itβs animal shelters such as this one that make me speechless. This is the second time we have found a dog that we absolutely fell in love with. We were ready to adopt it, love it, and give it a forever home which is supposedly what these places are all about. But the workers said that the dog had to go to the vet to get checked out. Okay. So they told us to call the next day and we did. Conveniently someone had already filled out an application for the dog even though we called exactly at 12 which is when the shelter opens on weekends. As it turns out in places like these you have to know someone who works there otherwise good luck adopting. I am extremely disappointed and hurt and will definitely tell people to stay away from this place.

Little Shelter is simply the very best Rescue. They are the only Rescue on Long Island with a "retreat" upstate for the dogs who have not been able to be adopted. The dogs live in apartments and have 24 hour live-in care. They run and swim on 150 acres. I am happy that they are very careful and screen potential adopters. Every shelter should do the same. There are some real "nuts" out there. who should not be allowed to own pets. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY.
Sandy Kubica
I have been volunteering with Little Shelter for a period of time. I am also a person who feeds feral colonies on the island. There was no one I could call but Little Shelter to help me to get some of the more endangered cats in our colonies taken care of humanely with tremendous respect and love towards them. I have nothing but good things to say about Little Shelter as a volunteer and as a person who has use them for the TNR program they are five stars plus

I found my dream doggie soul companion here six years ago, which is why I give this shelter 2 stars...as well as the cleanliness. However, after recently attempting to adopt a dog, I'm very disappointed. My parents had tried a few months earlier, at my recommendation, and had an even worse experience that included age bias statements. The disorganization here in calling, following up, and over- or under- screening candidates means fewer animals are finding good homes. The system, and management, need an overhaul. The woman in charge is extremely rude. Of course any adoption denials - even due to their confusion and irrational policies - means the pet gets adopted out from under you after days of effort and they keep the non-refundable donation deposit. Quite the scam at the expense of animals and animal lovers, as evidenced by many other reviewers. Thankfully, we found the second doggo companion of our dreams at a shelter in Calverton.
John Prestigiacomo
Adopted our two little girls there many years ago and go back a few times a year to donate food and/or money. Staff could not be nicer or more professional. It takes a special type of person to so freely give your time and emotions to such a great cause and everyone we have ever come across fits that profile perfectly. A wonderful shelter run by amazing, caring people.
Carlo Sclafani

My first time there yesterday at the Little Shelter. Very clean and nice. Everyone was very pleasant and helpful. Was a little disappointed that "Wally" was already on hold but it wasn't their fault it was Petfinders not updating their site. I drove there before they opened and I guess I should have called 1st. Helene our tour guide was lovely. They are very well organized.

On June 27, 2017 my husband and myself went to Little shelter to see a dog for adoption. We loved the little guy and knew we should be his forever family. I must say the first meeting with one women staffer was not that pleasant. Having had dogs since 1962 of all breads from irish setters, malmute/huskies two previous labs over 46 years of marriage usually two at a time who lived to 13-14 years and rescues we are experienced. The women basically made my husband retired school teacher myself retired nurse 4 grown children, 6 grandkids and 4 grand dogs to be morons I wanted to smack her!. On a positive note we went back with our dog for meet and greet with staffer Jon who was amazing and came home with our Barley. Please disregard any negative comments I have seen posted here. Little shelter is a wonderful adoption place and takes in nurses back to health dogs from town shelters. My Barley suffered an attack of acute Pancreatitis after his adoption and took care of the entire bill. I have witnessed first hand how great little shelter is. Doreen Fiore Saint James N.Y

Little Shelter is such an amazing organization that supports and takes care of animals who have been abandoned, abused and/or have yet to find the perfect home. The staff truly cares about these animals and treats them all as their own. Even with Hurricane Sandy, which caused so much devastation on the east coast, the Little Shelter staff worked around the clock protecting their animals and ensuring their safety. If you are looking to adopt a pet, PLEASE go to Little Shelter, you will not be disappointed!

If your looking to adopt a cat or dog please do not EVER go to little shelter on Warner Rd. The girl who helped us was very kind and helpful and made us feel welcomed. We chose two kittens to adopt for an exorbitant price. No problem. We provided all the requested information on the adoption form. Left a deposit. Today a "worker" from little shelter called asking for "more information". The woman was rude, condescending, accusatory and downright mean. We have fostered litters, provide the very best if not spoiled environment for our beloved animals and always give them the highest vet care either through local vets, our rescue friends or vet affiliates. This woman is a detriment to the rescue and shelter organizations of the world. She went so far as to accuse us of being "hostile" while we were gladly answering her questions and providing her the "information" she was requesting. The only person being HOSTILE IS HER. She had absolutely no idea how to speak to people or how customer service works. So much so I will no longer be adopting the cats from little shelter. I wouldn't give them a dime of my money. If your looking to adopt from a FRIENDLY educated shelter please contact you local town shelters and not this private nasty big business organization called LITTLE SHELTER located in east Northport. It's not worth your time. They obviously have no interest in actually placing animals in good loving homes. They just want to violate your privacy, waste your time and ruin your day and steal your deposit money. And if they think this scathing review won't find its way to every single site humanly possible they are sadly mistaken. Yelp here I come!

So I adopted a dog from this place back in December . Me and my family were aware that the dog has been adopted out before for 6 weeks. They gave us some bs story n couldn't get there facts straight about the dog cause when I read the documents on her , it stated a different story about her previous adoption including a round about age . Which the people at the shelter told us she was alittle over a year and the papers said around 2 years . Let me tell you this dog tried to attack all of us . When I mean attack , this dog wanted to kill. We had her for 1 day and the dog acted like she had rabies . We had to call someone out from the shelter to come get her . They then told us they weren't going to sell her again but yet she is still up on their adoption page . The dogs name is Gloria . She is a German Shepard mix .i would recommend no one get this dog .

We adopted Sadie nearly a year ago. We knew Sadie had some health issues but adopted her anyway in order to give her a chance at a better life. Sadie has become an instant member of our family and The Little Shelter has been fantastic in following up on Sadieβs health . I would highly recommend adopting through this group.

Let me start by saying upon my search in looking for a small dog over the last 6 months i finally stumbled over this place Little Shelter. I spotted this one particular dog i feel in love with. I reached out to shelter & expressed my interest being i was traveling a bit far to come meet & greet with him. So upon visiting the facility about 2 weeks ago being that my son wasn't able to come at the time i filled out the necessary paperwork & everything was verified & reference was checked out 100% i was approved. I want to say upon the day agreed upon i wasn't able to be there due to small mixup beyond my control in which it was explained ahead of time i ask to pick the dog up following day i was denied the the dog & Manager David spoke to me in such a derogatory manner over the phone & showed no sense of understanding or compassion knowing how much me & this little dog connected. It totally crushed my world being my son & I was looking forward to the added addition to our warm & loving home. I must say i have never been treated so cold & disrespected in such a way i could not believe because of a minor issue he would deny my application & spoke to me so rudely & hung the phone up in my face. I have written a letter to have this look into much further being i was totally cordial & respectful thru the entire process to have something taking from you & knowing i ask to see the policy stating his reason for denying me he wasn't able to produce i refuse to accept this & will move forward to make sure he never does this to anyone else. He not only hurt me the dog was cheated from being put in such a beautiful home life he is so deserving of being he been in a shelter for little over 4 to 5 months that no one showed any interest in him. I was the 1st truly to show any interest & he probably will be there even longer when the opportunity was shut down from such a heartless & in-compassionate human being. There was a person outside coming in as i left the shelter & stop me to ask why i was so upset & as i began to explain she told me to hang in there she never made it in after me explaining what took place she said that's horrible what kind person is he to take away something that was already promised & under circumstance of reason i gave the dog should been given to me. She told me she is sponsor of Little Shelter but will go home & explain to her husband what took place with me & will not submit any more money to this Animal Shelter & she let me know they donate a good amount of money to this organization being she lives in Huntington. She also took my name & number & told me being her husband is retired Doctor he knows a lot of folks they will be in touch with me & she told me although i didn't receive the dog from Little Shelter another will come my way. I thanked her for being so kind & understanding in my time of distress being yesterday was mothers day. This guy David they have as a Manager needs to be fired he not a people person he could care less. My son was very upset by the way he handled the entire situation i wasted time & gas to come as far as i did to be told my application was denied & his exact words we are finished in such a cold manner. I will never recommend anyone to this place i would hate to see them endure what i had to go thru yesterday. I will say the few people that help me when i started process was really nice Shelby & Mike who was dog rescuer they were so nice. I just needed to express the hurt & disappointment i went thru over something so small one day should not have made to much a difference after i called & also explained to David in clear detail.

Little shelter was amazing since we walked in. They are all so helping in the process and made everything a lot easier. We were torn once we walked in to the kitty room. And thatβs when our little kitty baby found us. Itβs was love at first purrr. I would highly recommend Little Shelter to anyone looking to adopt, very knowledgeable, helpful and thought people.Thank you little shelter for my kitty.

First off the place was well maintained (for 2 stars)but staff had no clue about cat breeds or the understanding about cats being DECLAWED which is why I was denied my adoption. All I can say is Good Luck for those who want to adopt a loving animal in their home from this facility and make sure you have plenty of time for the whole process and remind them when youβre done, they will not go to you. I'm glad to see some people have had positive experience with the Little Shelter. However, given my experiences, I'm skeptical that these 5 star ratings are real. On the occasions that I've reached out for help, I have very rudely been told to get lost. The women I've dealt with are totally discourteous, insulting, morose, condescending and quite frankly, mean. Wow! If this is how you feel doing "good" work, don't do it. You're miserable and want to make anyone else miserable. I feel terribly sorry for the animals there. Animal rescue is a frequently overlooked and unappreciated service but there are people, including myself, who are more than happy to help in any way I can. These stories regarding denials are awful. These little animals are looking for a loving home not living the rest of their lives in captivity. My question is: how are donations actually being used? Little Shelter won't take anymore animals yet they deny good homes. Note to Little Shelter: Clean Up your Act. Take note from the likes of Starbucks, HomeDepot & LLBean, make customer satisfaction a priority. Dismiss those sourpusses in your employ (even though they may be volunteers).

Beautiful shelter, but the adoption process is ridiculous. The manager is incredibly rude and judgmental. We have fostered and adopted several senior/special needs pugs in the past few years, and have never been treated with this much disrespect. The nonrefundable application fee becomes a donation when they find a reason to deny the adoption.

While i know they do intend to have the well-being of animals in their care at heart, they have made it apparent that instead of going the extra mile and showing intentioned follow through on behalf of a dog owner, they will let spiteful and sick people manipulate the opinions of the staff to keep a loving and incredible person from getting his beloved dog back. They would rather deprive someone of his dog, due to the empty and hollow words of people who obviously didnβt want the dog in the first place, than actually investigate and do proper follow through. And now a dog will have to go through the stress of a shelter and being rehomed rather than go back into the hands of someone who absolutely loves and cares for all animals better than anyone i know. Poor decision making on the staffs part, and hopefully they are not as easily manipulated by spiteful and vengeful people who dont have a dogβs best interest at heart in the future.

The place is nice and clean and you can tell the babies are well taken care of. Only problem is they are very dishonest when dealing with potential pet parents. After a week making me believe I would get one of their babies (I call dogs babies) they come out with this so-obviously fake, illogical made-up policy preventing an already pet-parent with experience in training with a MALE dog to adopt another MALE dog unless I gave proof of neutering - βfor health reasonsβ - they said. The day after the called to lie to me I found out they gave the baby in adoption to somebody else. Obviously they had that other person in mind before. What pissed me was the lies and the lack of guts to face me and explain honestly their reasons. Nothing worse for an institution like this than dishonesty.

I want to be completely honest with this review. Me and my girlfriend were looking for a furry friend to bring home and enjoy (A cat). We first went to another cat adoption in Smithtown and most of there cats were very nasty so we decided to come check out little shelter. The staff at first were very nice and knowledge about there cats even know there were almost 300 of them. When first brought into the cat area it smelt very bad, I mean what can you expect when there is 300 cats! This was not the end of the world for us as we figured it would be the case, maybe not as extreme but we looked passed it. We found a cat that we loved and he seemed to love us just as much letting us hold him and play. We filled out all the necessary paper work and left the $25 non refundable deposit which was fine with us. The paper work requires 2 references and an alternate caregiver. We supplied 4 references as well as two caregivers if something were to happen to my girlfriend and I. We were told it is a 24 hour process and we would be approved/denied the next day and if approved we would have to pick him up by 6 p.m. the next day. The following day I started getting calls from all of my references who were surprised with how rude and aggressive they were. They called 3 of the 4 and all had the same answers for their questions. It seemed to be their big concern was if we would de-claw the cat or not. Before we thought about adopting a cat we would of considered it but after talking to the staff at more then one adoption location and doing some research we were set on not de-clawing the cat. We explained this to little shelter as well. After being extremely rude and not giving us any updates nearly 24 hours later I called to make sure all the necessary phone calls and paper work was received and the lady stated she needed some more information from some references and paper work. I made sure each refrence called her right away and got it taken care of. This took multiple phone calls to both friends and little shelter. I told them i was on my way as i would not make it there in time if i did not start driving to their location. I arrived there and was told by the secretary that i could not wait inside and that they would call me with a decision. Judging by their attitude i assumed we were most likely denied. I could not figure out why as we would be able to give this pet a wonderful home and all the attention he could ask for. I let the secretary know that I would sit in the parking lot until the decision was made. Eventually i received a phone call from the lady going over the adoption paper work. She was polite in telling us that they would not let us adopt the cat as they felt we may de-claw the cat. I informed her that we had no intentions of de-clawing the cat. I told her that the only circumstance that we would de-claw a cat is if that particular cat constantly scratched and hurt people, which i can not see happening as this cat was extremely friendly. Overall it was a pretty big let down as it seems all they want is your money, It is extremely unprofessional of them to push off the decision to the last minute as they did. I can now see why they have 300 cats, It is impossible to adopt any of them! I would not recommend this place to any one and I will definitely cross this place off the donations list. I feel bad for the cats as the cats here are great but the people are misleading and not.Sincerely,Tom (An adopter who will go else where and recommend others to stay away from this place)P.S. Some one please adopt Freddie as he is a wonderful cat and deserves to get out of this place! (they told us he doesn't like other cats but meanwhile is housed in "Gen Pop" with over 100 other cats :()

What a terrible experience I had at this shelter today with my family. I arrived with my three-year-old and my 5 year old. We were assigned to a boy named John who apparently had worked there for 10 years however even though we filled out a preliminary application about the fact that we had 1dog and 3 cats, And obviously 2 small children John decided to lead us through 3 different areas of dogs where not one of them fit the criteria for my family. John why would you have taken me through those areas with a three-year-old and a 5 year old and break their hearts and disappoint them after they saw a ton of dogs they were intrested in. We understand that we wouldn't leave the shelter with a dog today, however we did expect to be able to visit with at least one of them. And I feel so bad especially for that dog name sassy that you said might be a match for us but you said that we weren't able to take her out of the cage. The appropriate thing for you to have done little shelter and John would have been just tell us while we were in the office that you just didn't have any dog available that would work in a family that had 3 cats 1 dog and 2 kids. The manager was sheepishly staring out the window at me and my girls discussing with John how strange we thought it was that they wouldn't let Us interact with a single dog. I hope that the manager sees this, I really felt like our interaction at that shelter was handled incorrectly. Also, The other reviewer is correct the woman at the front desk needs to fix her face and fix her teeth because it's not a good look to look so nasty when you're doing charity work for animals.

I usually get uneasy when I think of animal shelters, picturing cramped cages and things like that. but this animal shelter seemed like an animal oasis and I was incredibly happy to adopt two kittens (sisters :) ) from here. they take so much genuine care of all the animals, so much I was almost shocked. such a great organization I'm so glad it exists and was staffed with so many wonderful, caring people.

I love Little Shelter and have only the most positive/wonderful things to say about the shelter and the staff. We adopted Scooby (known as Chowder at time of adoption) in June 2011 and he is simply the best dog I have ever had the pleasure to love and care for! Even though we live in CT, Little Shelter worked with us and made the adoption process as seamless as possible.Thank you for saving Scooby and for allowing us to make him a member of our family.

Beware if you adopt an adult dog. My dog was supposed to be 4 years old. Turns out he was more like 8-10 according 2 vets I took him to. Little Shelter said he was healthy. When I took him to the vet for a new pet visit two days after I got him, and he had an infection and a chronic skin problems. I spoke to several volunteers after my experience and was told this was a typical experience with adult dogs. When I contacted LS I was told that I could bring the dog to their vet. However I was not alllowed to go with my dog and they would take him. When he came back I was told he was fine but their vet said to bathe him with prescription shampoo and buy prescription food! So I asked LS why if he there was nothing wrong. They said that I was overreacting and again there was nothing wrong with the dog. I kept him for fear of his fate if I were to return him, not to mention there is a charge for returning an animal. He is on medication 3 times a day and a special diet. A cost I did not anticipate. So be weary.

Went a couple months back and the staff is extremely rude and pushy. They tried to force and yes i mean FORCE a cat with fiv (cat HIV) on me. When i declined since i have a ferret and a dog and was interested in getting two cats they were angry and refused to give me a cat. They basically wasted my time for over an hour since i would not take a cat that was sick becahse he could in fact infect my other animals. Highly unprofessional, rude, pushy, and sneaky. Do not recommend at all.

I don't know what happened but I went to get 3 month old puppy and we wanted to put the deposit down and they wouldn't let us. We called back the next day when they opened at 1 and the dog was Avaliable and by 2:30 it was no longer able for adoption. No one could give me an answer of how the dog got there or when they dog would be able for adopting. We where told the dog would be on the website by the next day and I kept checking and there was no dog on the website. Stories kept changing and nothing was consistent and a big flop horrible horrible place

Yes, some of these creeps actually get PAID for this. Bureaucracy doesn't belong in the pet world. By the way, I walked inside the place recently- it's absolutely disgusting in there. Someone should be checking THEM out.

It takes a very particular kind of person to work in the rescue / adoption field. I can not imagine the overwhelming stress these people are going through on a daily basis. These are hard working, dedicated, unappreciated and I am certain underpaid people doing more then just complaining about a problem but dedicating themselves to making a difference. I admire that these people are doing thankless work. The sleepless weeks nourishing baby animals day and night. The patience working with a traumatized animal that has been injured ruthlessly. Thank you Little Shelter staff for doing the work so many others simply wont. Good and caring people.

Kenny Senderoff

We had an excellent experience adopting Brownie this past weekend. The staff was exceptional. Everyone was professional and informative. We couldnβt be happier. The process was seamless!

I agree with the woman who posted that she has absolutely no idea of how to talk nicely to people. There was some miscommunication in the first cat we wanted was on antibiotics and we were told to try and adopt another cat. But Iβm not going to go into any situation here but very very rude
Allison Sung
Brought a kitten in there once that I found in a garbage can. I'm not allowed to have cats in my building and was just trying to do the right thing. They made it out to be my fault. The person I spoke to was also extremely condescending and rude. The staff here is almost unapproachable. I've also heard that there is a lot of grey area when it comes to all the money that you will be charged when adopting. I will never bother with this place again.
Kristin Minuto
This is a wonderful organization with a great mission. They provide a beautiful haven for dogs and cats to await being adopted, which is the hope. Thank you for all you do for these fur babies!
Winnie Lagnese
This Shelter openly discriminates against special needs adopting pets. They are a disgrace. In a time where everyone should be inclusive it is obvious they are not. Shame on you Little Shelter I hope the family brings a suit against you!
Jonathan Goldberg
The warm and friendly staff truly care about the animals that wind up here and it shows. Compassionate and professional are the first words that come to mind after dealing with them. If you're planning on a new pet, adopt one.
Alfred Fick
To those who need to trash little shelter employees remember they are all volunteers and are there to help the animals some may not have the best personalities but they have huge hearts. So think about that when you trash a person that you don't even know. Dealing with the public is never easy.
Tyler Tellez
The place was extremely dirty and the people were very rude. Not only did the staff not know what they were talking about or doing half the time, but they put more emphasis on you not being able to adopt than actually push you to adopt. Most of the animals were sick and injured and treated poorly so they look in bad shape. Also, the animals all seemed very malnourished and dehydrated as the people there do not take care of them at all. Do not go here, this place needs to be shut down.
Margaret Fessman
From cat kidnapped from place by mean humans years ago. Am Gabby. Torture me. No give treats for breakfast no matter how I scream. Dying from hunger. Send help. No one loves me.

Came to visit last week and its very dirty and crowded. The staff makes you feel like your not good enough to adopt from them. They have weird rules and any good reviews on here are posted by staff, I know this because when I walked in the front desk girl was asking her manager what to write in her google review. I decided not to adopt from them.

This place is very nice I took a look at it and I think I might get a dog or a cat from this place. Great job Little Animal Shelter God Bless your work, your making so much people happy!

This place is dirty and disgusting- no one can possibly care for all those animals appropriately. I really think they should shut down and let me not forget they are super duper nasty and lie. I drove away at 75 mph when they finally stopped lying.
Robert Church Jr
Fantastic staff who absolutely love all these animals and are committed to finding them great homes!! If you are looking for a pet, you have to start your search here...you will not be disappointed!!

I'M SO DISAPPOINTED IN THIS SHELTER.... I BROUGHT MY COUSIN HERE TO ADOPT A KITTEN CAUSE SADLY HER CAT HAD TO BE PUT DOWN DUE TO LUNG CANCER, NOW MY COUSIN LIVES IN NEW YORK CITY & DOESN'T DRIVE. WE FOUND A PERFECT KITTEN & SHE FILLED OUT THE APPLICATION, THEY ALSO WANTED MONEY THAT WAS NON REFUNDABLE IF SHE GOT DENIED TO ADOPT! WE WERE RUDELY TOLD WE HAD TO BRING THE KITTEN BACK TO THE SHELTER FOR SPAYING & SHOTS WHETHER WE THOUGHT THE TRAIN RIDE WOULD BE TRAUMATIC FOR THE KITTEN OR NOT!!! WE ASKED IF WE COULD USE OR VET & JUST SHOW PROOF THAT THE PROCEDURE WAS DONE AND THE WOMAN GOT VERY RUDE WHILE STATING "I'M NOT CALLING ANY OF YOUR REFERENCES, OR YOUR VET. UR NOT GETTING THIS CAT!!!!" ALL THEY WANT IS MONEY, ALL THE REVIEWS I'VE READ HAVE SAID THE SAME THINGS, RUDENESS, TAKING MONEY THEN DENYING APPLICATION FOR REASONS THAT ARE NOT RIGHT. THERE ARE SO MANY ANIMALS THAT COULD'VE HAD A LOVING FOREVER HOME BUT DUE TO THE HUMANS ATTITUDE AND GREED THE POOR INNOCENT ANIMALS WERE DENIED OF THAT LOVING HOME & FAMILY!!! I WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE & ANYONE I HEAR TALKING ABOUT GOING I WILL BE TELLING THEM NOT TO GO!!!!! THEY DON'T ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT THE ANIMALS FINDING FOREVER HOMES & LOVING FAMILIES THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT MONEY (DONATIONS)

Desk staff is not friendly at all which is sad because unfortunately these frown faced people affect the overall impression of the shelter and the animals are the ones that pay the price when good people feel the urge to want to just leave.
Peter G
We adopted two cats there and the staff was wonderful and we love the cats. A great place to go for a new pet
Chris Stallone
Never in my life have I encountered a group of individuals more dedicated to protecting, raising, and rescuing animals than at Little Shelter.
Madison Slater
We had an excellent experience adopting Brownie this past weekend. The staff was exceptional. Everyone was professional and informative. We couldnβt be happier. The process was seamless!
gloria lovett

From cat kidnapped from place by mean humans years ago. Am Gabby. Torture me. No give treats for breakfast no matter how I scream. Dying from hunger. Send help. No one loves me.
Sasha Marie
Came to visit last week and its very dirty and crowded. The staff makes you feel like your not good enough to adopt from them. They have weird rules and any good reviews on here are posted by staff, I know this because when I walked in the front desk girl was asking her manager what to write in her google review. I decided not to adopt from them.
Kat Pow
They are ridiculous on their adoption policy. Very judgemental. Almost like they want to keep all the dogs. Not really find them homes.
Erik Herz
Kind wonderful people here. They really care about the animals and who is adopting them.
Robin Ruinsky
I adopted my dog from Little Shelter six years ago. A great shelter run by caring people.

Tom Kennedy
Rescued my dog from little shelter and had the best possible experience. Everyone is super friendly and they care so much about the animals. Lola loves her new home
Lisa Zelniker
A wonderful place that works hard to find loving homes for homeless animals. They dedicate their time, money and love to those that are injured. It is a terrific place and I am happy my daughter and I got the opportunity to volunteer there!
Joseph Costello
I volunteered there and got to know the staff. They are the most dedicated and honest people who take the animals they shelter to heart. They regard the animals in their care as their primary responsibility..
Abby Nation
This is the best shelter in the whole wide world, they were able to connect me with my dream dog Harlem. Even though they can sometimes not answer their phone all the time. You should check them out.
Rosemary Rodriguez
They didnt let me adopt a cat only because when the lady asked if i would let the cat go outside. I said yes only with me if my family and i are having a BBQ yes i would bring the cat with me. I dont recommend this place very rude people.
Antonino Atl
Thank you for helping the animals I wish I could be there working with you so you can make your day easier. Wonderful place. Everyone should adopt and if you're thinking about it I would check them out first. The staff is the best and they go out of their way for the dogs and potential adopters
