I adopted a cat from here and everything about the experience was great. The staff are knowledgeable, kind, and caring. The housing for the cats at the shelter also seems quite nice and peaceful for them considering the situation they are in.I was given ample information about my cats background and personality to ensure we would be a great match. I had to come back a few days after adopting for a mild medical issue, and Wayside immediately took care of it free of charge.Highly recommended for any prospective pet owners!

We adopted our girls back in the beginning of September…. And it’s been pure bliss! The adoption process was smooth and easy- yes there was a bit of a wait time but thats to be expected. One of them had been grooming her spay incision too frequently and thankfully, we got to use Wayside’s vet services since I noticed it within 10 days of adopting her. She got antibiotics and a cone! Our kitties were up to date with their shots and all that other good stuff- so it felt like they were already set up for great success:) whatever the workers/volunteers do at wayside, makes it very easy for kitties to adjust in their new home! I can’t think of a more perfect way for it all to have happened :)

Our adoption process was great! We were able to meet multiple dogs to make sure we found a great fit for our families needs. All the employees were very professional and helpful.

I went into Wayside Waifs on December 3rd to pick out a cat, and ended up coming home with two adorable bonded sibling kittens. The volunteers were wonderful in their handling of the kittens as well as the transaction, and helping me understand everything I need to know about raising little kittens as opposed to older cats. The kittens are very healthy and happy, had already been neutered/spayed, and I feel that they are very responsible in being a temp host for the animals. I helped my aunt get a cat at Wayside Waifs last year. Both times, they had a better selection than the other shelter that I visited.

Wayside took not one but two days getting to know my family and I (including our shy pupper) to find a perfect new household companion! We initially came in thinking maybe our pup would get along well with a specific doggo living at Wayside. The staff worked with us, educated us, and in the end helped us learn a bit more about cues and play styles. It didn't work out with the first dog, but Wayside had faith and kept working with us.In the end, our pup still got to go home with a new furrever friend who has settled in wonderfully and is a lovely match. Throughout the process, each of the staff was patient, knowledgeable, and kind! It is a great and understanding environment.

We had a great experience adopting a sweet new dog for our family recently at Wayside Waifs! The adoption counselor spent plenty of time with us and made sure we had all the information about the dog/breed that they had available so that we could make the right decision and have us lots of resource material to set us all up for success. We're so happy with our new dog and the experience at Wayside Waifs!

I have adopted 2 dogs over 14 years from Wayside Waifs. Looking for another dog, since one of mine died last summer at age 13 and a half.... I recently adopted a mini schnauzer and westie mix.

We have now adopted three cats from Wayside in the past fifteen years: a bonded pair of adults and now a cute little kitten. Great place staffed by wonderful people trying to do right by all kinds of animals…

This is NOT a negative review, but I do want to mention that Wayside is understaffed at the moment and the adoption process will take a while (well over two hours for me, and I chose my kitten quickly). Definitely budget a big chunk of time. That being said, Wayside Waifs is amazing. I used to volunteer there and I can't say enough about the level of care that goes into each animal. For your $150 adoption fee you will get a pet who has had hundreds of dollars worth of quality vet care. Volunteers and staff work hard to socialize the animals and deal with any behavior issues. During the adoption process they will be upfront about any issues your pet may have. My kitten is perfect, but when I adopted my Chi many years ago they let me know about his luxating patella.Personally, I would never return a family member, but I can say from my volunteer experience that Wayside is good about accepting returns if the new pet isn't a good fit. People would return animals for reasons ranging from petty to valid.Honestly, I can't think of any reason not to adopt from Wayside! Budget an afternoon or evening and take home a buddy!

adopted yesterday, most of the people there are very nice but my girlfriend and I pretty much got lectured by this lady the whole time. She wasn’t very good at being welcoming and informative more of trying to seem like she knew everything about our current situation with my resident dog. Dog is sick with kennel cough and we didn’t realize until we got him home. took him to the vet the next day and the doctor told me that they knew about it when sending him home with us (would explain why the lady was obsessed with knowing if my resident dog had certain shots). He has been lovely so far the experience was not though.
Caitlynn Scaduto
I could not recommend them more. It’s been almost two years since adopting Lt. Dan, previously named Chris. Their sleepover program helped us figure out he would be a great fit in our family. He’s definitely an oddball, but he continues to surprise us with his goofy personality.
Hadley Maloney
We just got a new puppy and took her to the Saturday Puppy Socialization Stations class and the instructor, Molly, is terrific! I learned so much and so did my puppy! We will be going back next week and plan on being regulars because they have a great dog training program with a variety of classes and times available.

I had 2, 14.5 year old pugs that I had to put down due to ongoing, debilitating health issues. I spoke to Laura numerous times trying to prepare for this absolutely heart shattering journey. She showed all the compassion that a person whom I had never met in person possibly could and I canceled on our appointment the first time, and the staff was very supportive of my indecision and change. When the day did finally come, I took my boys to the Memorial center for cremation. Laura was there and she and another wonderful lady brought a stretcher out to get my boys. They showed so much mercy and compassion for them and us. They made all the arrangements inside the beautiful little building and I left my angels with them for their final care. That was Friday afternoon. They said that they would do their best to get them back home by the following middle of the week. Monday morning I received the call that they were ready to come home. As hard as this was for myself and our family, this facility, their staff, and their services and attention to detail were beyond anything I could have ever wished for. I am beyond grateful, and I will be the first person to assure everyone that is ever in need of memorial services for a pet, that THIS is the place to go, and the PEOPLE to have help you get through that horribly traumatic situation. They truly made my heart feel slightly less broken with their kindness, patience, and conscientious CARE for my 2 departed treasures. Thanks for being so wonderful. .

We recently adopted a 2 month old puppy from Wayside Waifs. Everyone working there, including volunteers, made the adoption experience wonderful. Ken spent time with us while we meet a few dogs and he was very knowledgable and informative. The whole experience was managed very professionally and it’s evident Wayside Waifs puts all of the animals as priority 1, which is how it should be.

We found our little puppy a couple weeks ago at Wayside Waifs. She is a sweetheart and we love her. A few days later, she got a cough so we got with their vet for some antibiotics. She's having lots of fun getting to know us. We're obviously just starting on some basic training. She's pretty easy to work with.Wayside Waifs is amazing. They really have a very efficient and effective process for introducing pets and going through the adoption process. I don't think we can handle another dog but if we were able to we would go through Wayside to find one. We love their facility and staff.

Over the last 20+ years I have had wonderful experiences at Wayside Waifs! They helped one beloved pet cross the rainbow bridge, and I have adopted two others from them. The people are kind and care very much about the animals that they care for.

Even on the opening day of their 80th anniversary, they were gracious and very helpful. The adoption process was simple and despite being super busy I felt like we were well taken care of. Our adoption counselor Candy, was very thoughtful and thorough in covering everything we needed to know.

So my boyfriend and I felt as if we needed a fur baby to add in our life and we decided to come here since his family adopted a dog from here as well. We’ve had her for about a month now and we’ve been doubting the breed they said she was. We were told that she’s a Blue Heeler mix but she doesn’t have the color nor body but kind of has the same face. So, we just thought she was a Blue Heeler German Shepherd mix but she doesn’t have any type of resemblance at all. We continued to do more research and found out that she might just be an Australian Kelpie but not way shape or form a Blue Heeler. For anyone who adopts, be aware they might not know the doggies breed and they well indeed make it up.

Wayside Waifs is an awesome nonprofit. They are a no kill shelter except if an animal is dangerous to the community, then they would regretfully euthanize it. They are amazing to volunteers (I'm a volunteer) and they have very adaptable schedules for them. They take great care of the animals, staff, and volunteers!

Very nice people. Took my dog molly in to get fixed they had a free spay/ shots and chip event going on. Molly was well cared for. They have gotten back to me everytime I had a question. Great people who really care about pets. Thank you to the whole staff team.

We've been to a lot of shelters and Wayside Waif is by far the best one we've ever been to. Staff professional, helpful and super friendly, facility unbelievably clean (couldn’t believe how well maintained it was) and you could just see how everyone was passionate about the animals and making matches. Highly recommend.

So nice when we had to bring our little dog that passed away. We got some little paw prints and a very nice note from staff at wayside. It was even signed by probably 10 staff members. We will be out some day to adopt another dog as we’ve seen how they care for the ones there and work hard to keep them exercised. Have only had nice encounters. Appreciate allowing us to wander to look at the available dogs for adoption.

We have adopted seven dogs over the past 30 years as family pets. Every Dog becomes a member of our family and lives a happy long life. We return to Wayside waifs because of the need for rescues to find good homes, as well as the friendly staff and the ease of the adoptive process. The staff is very familiar with the Dogs character, breed and are knowledgeable about Care and resources. Individuals are counseled and refreshed on their commitment to their new pet. Every Dog we’ve adopted has been a blessing to my family

Our volunteer, Susan I believe was her name, I can’t quite remember, anyways, I was there on Saturday for over 2 hours and she helped us pick out the perfect kitten, in fact we got 2! Even when we were waiting for our turn for the adoption process she kept us updated on how many people were ahead of us. They are siblings and totally perfect we love them so much. They weren’t what we were looking for, then she introduced us to them and we fell in love instantly. She was so patient with us and so helpful. It was a wonderful experience. Thank you to all of the volunteers who do what you do, Wayside is a wonderful place!

Outstanding organization caring for animals searching for new families and homes. We adopted Marilyn, in the silver paw’s program, who fit in to our family perfectly. She provided and received many years of love, a definite blessing! Fur family members are a gift.Open your heart and home for a beautiful blessing!

Don't adopt a pet here, they are callous and don't care about doing the right thing when they have the opportunity. A woman's dog was stolen while she was in the hospital and she has been grieving ever since. She found her dog here, and he had been adopted by a different family instead of returning him to his true owner, even after sharing her heartbreak. She didn't give up on or abandon her dog, he was stolen. She has done everything to find him, and this place has only added more pain to her heartbreak. Shame on them, there are so many lost, abandoned, abused dogs in the world, this one deserves to be with the woman who loves and misses him dearly. The lack of compassion days a lot about their motives. Do NOT adopt from this place, there are several others with much, much more humanity and compassion. I hope the lawsuit against these people and organization brings Jaxon back to his true home and human. 💞

Wonderful place to go find a new pet. Every person that worked there was courteous and did their best to help us find a new animal.

We've gotten multiple cats from Wayside over the years and every experience has been a great one! They always take the time to make sure that you get the right fit versus just taking any animal. The animals are always well taken care of and we could not be happier with our experiences.

We love Wayside Waifs! We have adopted twice from there! Everyone is so kind. You can feel the love for the animals there! They make sure to take the best care of all the animals! The rooms for the animals are well kept and cleaned! The adoption process is very easy.

Amazing! The people were caring and considerate, you could tell that they genuinely cared for the animal's they work with. They were also very accommodating and provided an abundance of resources regarding the adoption process, and pet ownership in general.

I found my perfect cat (now emotional support animal) here and I’m on my seventh foster today! I love the staff and how much they care not only for their animals but the community. It’s one of the biggest shelters I’ve visited and they take great care to make sure their rescues reach the right forever home for them.
Monica L
Justice for Jaxon! If a dog has a known owner that dogs needs to be returned to the owner. Also unbelievable that the people who adopted this dog aren't willingly giving him back to his owner. Go adopt another dog! May you all have the day you deserve!

This review is not directed to the morning staff from 10/11/24 in anyway but the evening staff can kiss my entire asssssssssss!!!! I went in reserved two cats and prior to this had already explained my child’s siruation; in which they advised of what would be best fit for my home and child’s need. Well a woman who believed she knew my life (you know that privilege) and went on to state that my child was scared of the cat and we didn’t want it, mind you I didn’t say two words to anyone when I arrived back and advised on something she had no knowledge of. In the end we ended up going to KCPP and had a wonderful experience without prejudice and now have two cats we are on our way home with.

I went with my family to adopt a kitty and as soon as we pulled into the parking lot we were surprised by how large this shelter is! It's super cool from the moment you step in and the staff were really attentive. We were helped by some awesome people and ended up adopting two kitties Binx and Koki, who are perfect so far and seem to be thoroughly enjoying their new home. They both enjoy sitting by the windows and Binx has a new found love for laying in bathtubs. Would definitely recommend adopting from here.

Everyone was so kind and helpful! We ended up being home a new buddy! They were thorough In making sure it was a great fit! I appreciated they took their time with our current doggo while introducing him to the new dog. They even followed up a day later to see how everything was going.

After 15+ years, I had to say goodbye to my sweet Mercedes today. I adopted her as a puppy from Wayside Waifs in 2005. She was treated medically all 15+ years by Dr. Kurt Cavanaugh Pet Hospital, and played at Pete and Mac's Pet Resort since she was 6 months old.
Jill Milner
We got the perfect pet. You can too! All the personnel at Wayside Waifs were wonderful. You could tell they care. And sorry but I have to shout out to Hills Science Diet. They were on site for the adoption event and supported new pet parents with a bag of food. It was a wonderful experience!
Ashley SoBougee
I had a better experience the second time around with adopting. I came in and talked to a rep. I told her that I wanted a small dog. $35 special. I got a poodle. I Luv him. I enjoyed the experience.
Kathryn Woolard
Wayside Waifs made the adoption process easy and stress free - we are so happy with the new addition to our family. We appreciate the work they do!
Jessica Boyd
Horrible experience 😑 we eneded up leaving and going through pawportunities and we now have a sweet healthy kitten. I would not come to this place the blonde older lady was so rude. Just glad we were able to have a great experience somewhere else

Heart broken to hear that a Shelter I have admired for years has been involved in a situation that they know they can help to solve. Someone there has the authority to do something to get Jaxson back.I don’t want to hear “We can’t do anything anymore. We have exhausted all options. Jaxson can’t be taken away from the new family”.Anything is possible and this dog needs to be reunited with her real owner. You have the ability to make this right ! START WORKING ON IT.You will be home soon, Jaxson. Keep hanging in there.

We adopted our lab shepherd mix from this place 9 years ago. We unfortunately lost her recently and I know it's only a matter of time before we adopt again because we know we can offer the right pup(s) a great home. However, after reading reviews and claims of this place adopting out people's pets I'm appalled and will NOT to adopting from wayside waifs again. The final straw for me has been reading their responses which lack any kind of compassion or empathy.
Gerald Maloney
Loved the whole experience. Big kudos to Ken, Cassie, Diane, and Brooke! We love Blanche and she is doing really well❤️
Chris Chubick
Wonderful place to go find a new pet. Every person that worked there was courteous and did their best to help us find a new animal.
Erica Smith
We've gotten multiple cats from Wayside over the years and every experience has been a great one! They always take the time to make sure that you get the right fit versus just taking any animal. The animals are always well taken care of and we could not be happier with our experiences.
Daisy
We love Wayside Waifs! We have adopted twice from there! Everyone is so kind. You can feel the love for the animals there! They make sure to take the best care of all the animals! The rooms for the animals are well kept and cleaned! The adoption process is very easy.
Dominick Macoubrie
Amazing! The people were caring and considerate, you could tell that they genuinely cared for the animal's they work with. They were also very accommodating and provided an abundance of resources regarding the adoption process, and pet ownership in general.
Ruthie Wu

Delainey O'Brien
Everyone was so kind and helpful! We ended up being home a new buddy! They were thorough In making sure it was a great fit! I appreciated they took their time with our current doggo while introducing him to the new dog. They even followed up a day later to see how everything was going.
Susan Schaefer
Looking for the perfect family pet can be stressful, confusing, and depressing with how many animals are out there that need good homes. After visiting another shelter, Wayside Waifs was a huge sigh of relief. They knew the dogs and made wonderful recommendations for us, telling us all about their history and personalities. Thank you Wayside for all you do for the animals and the families looking to add their furry new member! Susan
Hannah Arst
I grew up going to Wayside and always LOVED it, I remember getting to pet the cats, go into their separate rooms with them, and there was no fuss about it. We were always just asked to sanitize our hands before touching new cats. Now their policy for visiting the cats is absurdly convoluted. You are not allowed to touch or visit with any cats, ONLY LOOK at them, and if you want to visit with a cat to see if you're compatible, you have to fill out a questionnaire, tell the front desk, wait for a volunteer to take you to the cat, and then they hover while you try to meet the cat, nor can you even go into a cat room without a volunteer. Our volunteer actually opened the cage for us to pet the cat and then proceeded to pet the cat herself while we just stood there watching her. I totally understand having a system or procedure for such things, but how is anyone supposed to get to know a cat if they can't have an authentic interaction with them?? Probably won't be coming back sadly.

Such a great experience adopting here. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, we love our pup. 10/10!!!

We were there for a function and took a tour of the facility. We have been watching this organization grow over the years and add new programs. All of the staff, directors and volunteers take great care with the animals. We are lucky to have Wayside in our area.

I recently adopted my little guy from Wayside Waifs! They were so helpful and kind, answered any and every question I had, and ensured my new friend would be a good match! I’m forever grateful- Thanks for everything, friends!!
Tyrz That Taurean Goddess!
Somehow our dog ended up at Wayside Waifs. My backyard gate was open and his collar was on the ground at the back gate. The story I got was the Grandview Animal Control picked him up from a neighbor around the corner. When I called animal control they said they never picked up my dog but someone took him to Wayside Waifs???? They were charging me $300 in Grandview fee’s as they told me and I would have to call Grandview to get it sorted out. Grandview tells me those fee’s are all Wayside Waifs fee’s. Now I don’t know if I was being scammed or what really happened but I finally got my dog back because someone told me to look on FB lost animal and there he was!!! He is back home with a terrible kennel cough now which only cost me more to take him to the vet!!! Maybe I wouldn’t be so skeptical if the story was right versus y’all trying to hit me with whatever fee’s you could. Maybe that’s how you make your money. How can my dog be taken from my back yard enclosed fence and now I’m paying to get him back??? As you can see once we cleaned him back up, he was not impressed!!

Your help is awesome and the adoption of Jett and Mitzy was so awesome and easy. I can't remember the girls name that helped us but she was really good. I am so happy with the two.

Not one volunteer spoke to us when we walked in. Not even a smile. There were about 4-5 in there. Literally. Not. One. Absurd. My previous experience was great but this was ridiculous.I had my kennel ready and all. I even left another shelter before arriving because I wanted to bring my business here first. It also doesn't help that many of the animals are sick or strays.

Wayside is such an amazing shelter. We got our sweet pup, Louie from there in 2019 and I always encourage people to check them out. They care deeply about the animals in their care and you can see AND feel that when you’re there.
Ashley Ousley
Love Wayside and all that they do! We just adopted a puppy, renamed Buddy from Jax. He's the cuddliest cutie ever. I'm so grateful Wayside brought him up from OK so we could fall in love ♥️

I don't appreciate how I was treated today by your admissions representative with the face tattoos. 1- screamed at me for not having my dog on a leash when he was. He has a behavior where he plops down and won't move (similar to a child throwing a tantrum). No amount of tugging his leash will make him move either (I would know from the 10 months I had him). What does work, is dropping his leash and walking off and he will follow. He was only about 5 ft from the door (with me watching him the whole time), and he's never bitten anybody or attacked anybody. I get that he looks scary at 156lbs, and you have other animals around, but he's never killed another animal, or ever done anything violent to anybody. Then other than screaming at me, her only question was if he had gained weight since I adopted him 10 months ago. Yes, he has gained weight despite having his food measured and amount not changed since I got him. He can barely move due to all his health conditions, and him plopping down wherever he pleases prevents us from going too far. Just because you're a big lady, and look rough does not mean you can bully people and be rude! I pray he goes back to his previous foster and not her. All in all, my adoption experience here was much better than admission. I'm not really sure what this ladies problem was but I sure didn't appreciate her making a tough situation worse for me. The only reason I surrendered him back was due to unexpectedly having to sell my house. No rentals will accept an XL breed period. I tried. ✌️

I adopted Teddy over one a year ago. We have recently relocated to Orlando Florida. He absolutely loves it here!! I am so grateful to Wayside Waifs for my precious baby... I love him SOOOO much!! Thank you...

To quickly get into it great staff, easy adoptions, and dogs comes with everything shots, fixed, info for vets, and microchipped. But to top it off our new puppy showed signs of kennel cough soon after taking her home and she spread it to our other dog. Google said they would get over it most vets don’t prescribe anything they just need lots of rest. The shelter gives you 10 days to notify them if something is wrong with the dog after that they are not liable. Of course our dogs health took a turn for the worst on day 11. I called the shelter and told them I know it’s day 11 so they can’t do anything but my vet can’t get me in quickly bc it’s 2:00 on a Friday. And I don’t know if she’s gonna make the weekend without treatment. They told me to bring her in ASAP they would fit her in (I fully expected a huge bill). They treated her, sent us home with meds, eye drops, and several cans of wet dog food to help her eat/gain weight……. For free! Best customer service ever I was definitely expecting a we don’t care she’s your problem now. I’m so happy with my overall experience at wayside waifs.

Well we have adopted here 4 times now and this last one is a very cute puppy, but after a week at our home our vaccinated 6y0 contacted kennel cough. Took her to our vet and the puppy is the only logical way she could have gotten it. The puppy was asymptomatic but still apparently contagious. Was told at adoption there was a 10 day guarantee for anything they could have contracted at shelter. When I called I was told there was no guarantee and she was sorry and good luck. Well now we have to isolate dogs for 2 weeks. Never had this probl in our home before even with 4 dogs.

Our experience was top notch! The volunteers and staff were very thorough and very kind! We were the last people there and had volunteers and staff stay behind and wave us goodbye as we left! Not to mention, we adopted the day before Christmas Eve and everyone took their time and didn’t rush us out even though they for sure could have with it going into the holiday weekend. We feel blessed to have found our little guy at Wayside Waifs! We cannot recommend them enough!

My family and I had a wonderful experience at Wayside Waifs. The facility was well maintained and the staff was friendly. Very helpful people when picking out a pup or dogThey know there stuff to help pick out the right animal for you. So go in and you can look for cats and other animals also.

I have adopted several fur babies from here. All I can say is never again. I need to know that I'm truly "rescuing" my new family member and giving them a better life and not keeping a stolen animal from its rightful owner. Jaxson needs to be sent home. I will never support this organization again. There are so many other rescue groups out there who can and will do the right thing every time...not just when its convenient.
Taylor Wheeler
Amazing experience! Met with I believe his name was Matt. Who was great, showed us some great dogs and was very thoughtful about making sure we were making the right decisions. He was very patient and answered all of our questions. There are so many amazing dogs here and if I had my way I would have left with 3 of them. This place was filled with a ton of great people and would 1000% recommend coming here. Ignore the other bad review you may see cause not a single negative thing I read was true. Tommy has a new family and home because of Wayside Waifs! Could not be happier!
Larissa Cooper
Disappointed in an organization I have supported so much over years. I can not believe the slimy behavior wayside is showing. It hurts to think if the baby I rescued from them was lost (even with a microchip like Jax had) that they would just sell her as quickly as possible and not think reuuniting us is worth it. I am sure they will just copy and paste the same victim blaming rhetoric as a response to me. How embarrassing for them. They have lost a loyal supporter from me. I will never recommend this place to anyone again. I will never donate again. Great Plains and Pet Project are the real supporters of animals in KC and actually work hard to support animals and their families!!!!
Remick Zismer
We came in to adopt a new kitten into our home, where we had specific needs since we have kids, a dog, and an older cat, and Wayside made the experience easy and comfortable. We adopted a very sweet kitten, with information about her from her fosters and the workers there about how she would fit well with us. We've had no issues and our little furball has been a wonderful addition to our family. We had previously adopted our dog from wayside 6 years ago and the process was just as smooth. They truly care.
Micah Caleb
I have read bad reviews on here. However, I never had an issue with Wayside Waifs. We have adopted 4 pets from here in the past two years and have had nothing but great success. I also have had friends to adopt from here and because of my referral and they too spoke highly. This is the best well kept shelter I have ever seen and visited.
Dave S
Staff is fantastic! Service is excellent. No tegrets that we made a 6 hour trip to get our new addition to the family.

I HIGHLY recommend Wayside Waifs. We've adopted two wonderful dogs from Wayside Waifs. Everyone there is super friendly and knowledgeable. They really care about the animals and it shows. #adoptdon'tshop

As a entrepreneur I love giving back in anyway possible. This shelter is top notch so I bring kiddos by to see how well cared for the animals are. I host a dog show at my gym to bring animal lovers together and of course raise money for the shelter to care for rescue animals. If you are thinking of owning a animal and want your kiddos to know how to care for them as well. They have classes to teach animal care. Love wayside being near my community.
Emily Murphy
Wayside Waifs has been amazing! We had our first adoption there nearly 4 years ago, and just added another kitten to our family recently. The volunteers there are very helpful and caring and really want the best for the people and pets. I would recommend them to anyone looking to adopt.

While I respect all efforts and challenges a rescue may encounter there are values, morals and ethics lacking from this business. They have not been honest or taken any accountability for an incident regarding an adoption of a dog, Jax. The owner of the dog did everything she could do to get him back and Wayside Waifs went ahead and adopted this dog out and refused any contact with the owner. Wayside Waifs has disregarded any values and morals they once had and violated the ethics and trust of the community.Editing to respond: The dog had identification tags when originally picked up in Arkansas before crossing state lines. Values and morals do not have to be determined by laws alone. Yes, you should abide by the law but I don’t see any law stating you cannot reunite a dog with the rightful owner. In Missouri dogs are considered property.
Ashley Smith
They like to take animals from out of state and then lie about them when the real owners come forward. Also it blows my mind that a "rescue" brings out of state animals in regularly when there are THOUSANDS of homeless animals already IN Kansas City that need help. Shame on you all. Especially the unprofessional employees working the phones. Just disgusting. Every last one of you.ETA: Nice job with the victim blaming response. You're disgusting. Still not addressing why you aren't helping local animals instead of stealing them from other states!
Cynthia Talley
We adopted (Bruce) now named Ollie one week ago and we feel like we hit the jackpot with this pup! He has settled in nicely and is bringing us loads of love and fun! Thank you Wayside Waifs!

Very sweet staff, I'm struggling a Lil to keep up on dog food and applied for the pet food pantry and they hot me set up for a pick up the next day. I wasn't expecting a lot but they provided more than I thought they would and it warmed my heart to see how much they care about animals will definitely be giving back when I can afford it

All these other bad reviews here are a bunch of sheep following the herd of someones situation. But I adopted my dog here Blue Bandit which later was changed to Barry. Place was great and I'll always recommend this place to anyone.

I had my cat cremated at Wayside Waifs just last week. Rachael and Victoria are amazing. When I brought her home I decided to look at the ashes of previous pets I've had. 2 of them were not done correctly and I had them done in another state. I contacted Victoria and she let me bring my other 2 pets ashes in to be corrected for free. They turned out great and the way you expect ashes to look. I am very impressed by the service I received for the pet memorial services.

I was nervous to go to the shelter, I knew it would be so hard to only adopt one animal. I wished I could take them all!But when we got there I saw that the grounds and buildings were so well kept. When we went inside we were greeted by the nicest and informative team of orofessionals!Seeing all of the animals were kept in such clean and colorful surroundings, finally I was totally relaxed and ready to have a meet and greet with our soon to be furever friend! Wayside Waifs is just an awesome place in every way!

We were excited to get our dog until her personality started changing and she started whining a lot, has tripped her owner several times. Later when asked to bring her back the lady on the phone said, yeah, those puppy mill dogs are very unstable. We were never told she was a puppy mill dog, just that her owner was being evicted and couldn’t keep her, running a puppy mill will get you evicted. We were deceived and lied to and now they say we can’t give her back for at least 8 weeks. If you want to trust these people that’s on you guys. I don’t recommend them at all.

Pretty bad experience here unfortunately. Wayside Waifs never disclosed to us about our cat’s problem with peeing outside of her boxes which has persisted throughout the last almost year that we’ve had her, they told us the wrong age of the cat and they asked us if we planned to de claw her, we said no and they were like “oh good” but she was already declawed in her front paws. Go here if you want a mystery box animal

A few months back I chose to volunteer here, which gave me a decent bit of anxiety because I know for a fact that most of these dogs could easily drag me at any point in time, but I have to say it is the best decision I could’ve made for myself. My parents question why I felt the need to volunteer, I own 9 pets myself and I have a really busy schedule, but something told me it would be worth it- and it definitely is. Since I’ve been volunteering here I’ve met great staff members, volunteers, and definitely a lot of sweet dogs that have left me to go to their new homes. And some- that are still here. We can’t always promise puppies or small dogs will be there, but I do say that if you truly are looking to find your best friend, searching here is a great start. You might end up with one, or ten… featuring my first friend that I met there (the dog)

Very helpful people when picking out a pup or dogThey know there stuff to help pick out the right animal for you. So go in and you can look for cats and other animals also.
Michelle Hestand
Heather Parrilli

Andrew Barnhill
The staff is really accommodating and helpful. Because of them, I was able to adopt my first cat within the hour. It was fast, easy and the explained the entire process throughout. They also offered some personal advice and experiences to help me on my journey. Now, because of wayside, My cat has a loving home. I'm so thankful for the people at Wayside and I'll definitely be back if I need more animals.
Kathy Schroeder
I would not give them one star they had a dog there that was stolen from its owner while a friend baby sat the dog out of state. When they found out the did everything possible to hid the facts from the original owner of her dogs where about sand refused to return the dog! The dog was taken from Oklahoma to Arkansas then sent to wayside Waifs in Missiouri poor moral establishments that will not help a 5 year owner to get her dog Jaxon back after the police were even involved they refused to cooperate . So sorry for the owner who the dig was the only family she had!

Both me and my sister have adopted cats from Wayside and both of us have had bad experiences. We have the sweetest cats, but hers brought Ringworm home to her other cats (still dealing with months later because it's so contagious, and that they insisted had multiple negative ringworm tests) and mine has a gum disease they didn't disclose to me that requires a $1000+ dental surgery in the next few weeks. I emailed them about it and they said they noted some inflammation in his front teeth (not the ones that have actual issues, also no notes of it in the medical forms they gave me). We don't trust their vets, or maybe the cats aren't examined enough but either way expect a lot of vet bills after you leave this place. I tried fighting for them to cover part of my cat's surgery because it's legit been four days since I got him, and he did not develop this gum disease overnight, but they want me to schedule an appointment to see him (they know I live an hour away) before telling me if they would help cover the costs or if they could provide the surgery and they won't reimburse anything outside of Wayside. Super disappointed.

Absolute liars. Unfortunately we had adopted a 1 year old German Shepard and had to take him back less than a week later because he tried to kill any animal smaller than him. You guys have now put the dog back up for adoption and said first of all that he does well with small animals just slow introductions, not true whatsoever. I won’t put the name of the dog because he is a good boy he just need to be with large dogs his size. He had seen a small cat that we have in our house, charged at the cat as fast as possible trying to kill him. The cat was just standing there minding its own business. Then you guys want to say he doesn’t need a fenced in yard? He’s a 1 year old German Shepard he will run away he has tried multiple times in a 5 foot fenced in huge yard. Please take precautions adopting from this place and get every single piece of info possible. MATT IS THE BEST, he will tell you everything he can that he knows and help as much as possible.

Great experience. Everyone is friendly and answers all your questions. We met with our puppy twice, and staff had a lot of information ready to tell me. Big open rooms to play and meet in. Our adoption counselor was GREAT! She was so nice and answered any questions and took the time to help us. She even called to follow up when we put a hold on the dog. It did take a while to get the adoption going and paper work, but it was saturday mid day, so it was to be expected. Clean, professional and overall great place! Cant wait to come back and get another furry friend for our pup!

Took my dog to the vaccination clinic. It was a great experience for him. I will definitely be back and recommend it to anyone. Very reasonably priced.

My husband and I adopted a husky/malamute mix from Wayside in June 2012. Our experience there was wonderful. We made a trip to see the dog on a Friday, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. We came back to pick her up on Sunday and we received the same great treatment as we finished her adoption. Several weeks after her adoption, we got a call from Wayside to see how our new pup was doing. This is a great shelter - it is very clean and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The animals are well cared for.
Amanda Wilson
Deals in stolen dogs, refuses to work with law enforcement to return the animal to his rightful owner. Gets animals from shelters out of state, even though there are plenty of animals in need locally. Horrible organization, doesn't deserve your money or your time.
Shelly McDermed
I love this place. I recently adopted a 3 month old & a 4 month old kitten. They are perfect together. They are healthy and very happy. The staff was wonderful and caring. All the cats looked well taken care of. My son and I are going to volunteer here. You do have to be patient with them. It's a big place. Have a carrier if your going to adopt a cat and bring a leash and collar with you if your going to adopt a dog. Be patient with them, they adopt a lot of animals. We were very well taken care of through the whole process even though they were busy.
Beth Whitney
One of our kitty "family" got sick very suddenly and had to be put down. We went to wayside waifs to get a new kitten to join our family. We went the day after Thanksgiving so our whole family could go. They were extremely busy. Let me just say how incredibly professional and knowledgeable our adoption counselor was. We adopted baby kitty named Puck. He is so warm and wonderful. I just can't say enough about the staff maintaining their composure. The people that the staff have to deal with are not always nice. Very entitled people I witnessed expecting everything right now. I couldn't be as nice as the staff was. I have nothing but respect. Kudos to all of you. And thank you for our baby. We will be back for any future adoptions. My oldest son also went here a few months ago and had a very positive experience.
Katelyn Harrison

We absolutely love Fiesta and have named her ‘Fenwick’. We suspected she might have Parvo due to an earlier incident at Wayside and when we called , Wayside was amazing at getting her in to be seen and tested for Parvo which was fortunately negative! They gave us all the meds we need for her diarrhea and kennel cough and she was so excited to get back home. She filled a huge hole in our heart after we had to put down our dog of 16 years down. Thank God for places like Wayside Waifs!
Laura McMullen
The story of Jaxson makes me sick to my stomach. Destroying the life of this young lady , who did NOTHING wrong, by stealing her beloved best friend. Where does this EVIL come from? If this had been my dog, they would have serious regrets. I would go to WAR. World war 3! Let me know, readers, if you figure out a way we all can help. Ill never adopt from here again.

I just would like to give the entire Pet Memorial department an exceeds review! I was so emotional on the day I brought Lilo in, it was hard to even speak. They were SO caring and kind on the day I brought my 12+ year old cat in to rest and today when I picked up his ashes. The front desk ladies who helped me at both times were so soft spoken and sweet! The ladies who were in the room with me when the process had started were so patient and gentle! Thank you SO MUCH for making such a heartbreaking decision a little more easy to bare.

I can’t say enough good things about Wayside Waifs!! I just adopted a kitty from there, and my experience was amazing. The staff and volunteers were so patient and knowledgeable, and they obviously really care about what they do. If anyone from the cat team is reading this, Kitty Boi says hi, and he’s very happy in his new home!!🥰

Only putting one star because I have to to in order to post this review. Zero stars would be better. Their policy on looking at dogs is awful and hurtful to families. You shouldn’t be able to look at multiple dogs back to back and make other families wait for a decision to be made before they can even have a chance. We went to look at a certain dog but was told she was in isolation and wouldn’t be able to be seen. Only to hear an hour or so later that another family was given a chance to see her. We were able to see her but after we fell in love and wanted to adopt her we were told the other family finally decided and we’re taking her. Once you move past a dog, that dog should be fair for anyone to adopt if they fall in love with them. If there isn’t an $30 hold on the dog it should be fair game. Absolutely heartbreaking to see and play with a dog and fall in love and know she would be a perfect fit only for another family to take her. Even though we were there first we didn’t even have a chance.

Return Jackson. Receiving stolen property is a crime. Just because you supposedly followed state guidelines does not mean you dud the right thing. Due to this I've unsubscribed and will no longer be an ally or foster. Hope this helps you make better decisions in the future.
Gwendolyn Dye
When you uphold INTEGRITY over the all-mighty dollar, I’ll change my rating. Shame on you for adopting a stolen animal! Justice for Jaxon, he HAD a loving home for 6 YEARS! His Momma was in the hospital! Spare me your canned response of feeling bad, DO THE RIGHT THING and you’ll feel better! Smh disgusting!

I adopted the sweetest puppy from Wayside Waifs. The staff was kind, patient, and informative. They provided me with community resources and training information to ensure I left feeling supported. I highly recommend adopting here.

I got my sweet boy Chachi from here. The staff is wonderful to work with! There are so many pets that need a home. Choose adoption, not puppy mills!
Kelli Moix
I have been following the story of a stolen dog (Jax) who landed at this facility and was adopted out. I realize I may not have all of the details involved, but compassion and transparency go a long way. I feel they could have put forth a lot more effort to right this wrong.

We adopted a puppy from here in August. It was a great experience. Unfortunately, our puppy unbeknownst to anyone had a brain disorder that progressed very quickly and he lost his ability to walk. We had to put him to sleep towards the end of October at 5 months old. The staff was so gracious, sensitive, and made us feel comfortable. I will definitely adopt from here again. Great people doing great work and providing amazing customer service. Thank you, wayside waifs for helping us through this difficult time.

My boyfriend and I adopted a dog from here in January 2019. We had an extremely pleasant experience. When we first got there we weren't sure if the dog we saw online was still available. We told the desk which dog we wanted to see, and we waited about 20 minutes for an answer on if he was still there. The dog was still available but was on hold. They told us we could see him, but that he was on hold for the rest of the day and we wouldn't be able to adopt him until the next morning. We decided to visit him, so a volunteer took us to a room to play with him. The volunteer, Chas, was extremely friendly to us. We decided we were going to put a second hold on him so that we could be the first to have a chance to adopt him the next day. Chas told us they were extremely busy and we should be prepared to wait a while before we could fill out the paperwork for the hold; turns out we were lucky and only had to wait about 5 minutes. As we were doing the paperwork, the family that had him on hold called to say they weren't adopting him, so we were able to take him home that night. The process from walking in to leaving with our dog probably took about 2 hours (the adoption paperwork took quite a while). The establishment was extremely clean - much cleaner than I was expecting and the dogs have great living spaces. The only thing I'll note to be aware of is the age they estimate for the pets. They told us the dog we were adopting was 3, but we had a hard time believing this just by looking at how white his teeth were and how much energy he had. When we took him to the vet they told us he was around 9-18 months. He also had kennel cough, but it went away on its own after about two weeks (our vet said it would go away, so no medications were needed). I would recommend this place to anyone. We love our dog very much!

I just adopted my 2nd dog in 12 yrs from Wayside Waifs and this experience was just as great as the 1st. Matt, the adoption counselor, was so nice and friendly and gave us great advice on things we hadn't thought about. We love our dog...Nino the pit bull❤️
Christine Henry
Will always have fond memories of this place. We adopted our furbaby here a year ago. The facility was clean and the staff clearly cared about these animals. I appreciated that we could go into a room and get to know her. We fell in love immediately and couldn't wait to take her home. They were good at explaining what to expect when we took her home.
Kollan Kolthoff
This shelter is amazing. My partner and I delivered some kittens from Iowa and we were amazed at the service and shelter in general. It smelled amazing. The staff was professional and fun to work with and coming from another “regional” shelter it was fun to see and compare the two. I would recommend this place hands down. A must see and a must visit if you are considering finding your next pet there.
Tracy Gray
If I could give negative stars, I would. Wayside Waifs murdered a dog that legally belonged to another rescue, claiming ownership based on false information. He had no bite history and they euthanized due to barrier reactivity after less than a week, even though they were told we were actively working on finding a foster.UPDATE: It was NOT untreatable. You did not do a proper behavior assessment, and your people admitted as much. And we even offered to come handle him ourselves. Save your lies for the publicity ops.
Mike
Don't try calling to see if the one dog you might be interested in is available. We called twice (within two hours of them opening mind you on a week day).It went to their voicemail both times. We then made the 20 minute trip out there to be told the dog was already gone. Basic communication skills aren't there.

I'm glad Wayside Waifs has such updated facilities. I saw it first in the early 90's. However, my experience on August 17th an event day was awful. Here's how it went. Wait in a line to meet an animal and pick out animals you MIGHT get to meet, stand in another line to present your choices only to be told half were already adopted, decide to wait for 2 1/2 hours to see IF you might get to meet any of the animals. FINALLY, you see the only dog that wasn't adopted on your list. He's a good dog and you decide you'll be a good fit only to be told to wait another hour and a half. You go have lunch. You're called back to wait another 45 minutes. More paperwork is filled out. Fine, I was committed. I still am. Hodge, formerly known as Bronx, has a very loving home despite not being sent home with antibiotics that he needed. I was called 3 days later about his URI. I called and after waiting 2 hours for Wayside Waifs to call me back I just made an appointment with the vet that will care for him from now on to make sure I had the necessary health care for our new family member.

An extremely well run establishment. A great place to find your next family member or volunteer.

When my dog died I called for cremation services, and I called a few places that seemed robotic and not understanding. Wayside was different. The staff had compassion and were so helpful and kind about everything. Staff called me after my dogs cremation and were again extremely compassionate about getting her back home. This was a very short and sweet process and wholeheartedly appreciate them.

I have been following the story of a stolen dog (Jax) who landed at this facility and was adopted out. I realize I may not have all of the details involved, but compassion and transparency go a long way. I feel they could have put forth a lot more effort to right this wrong.

It’s unfortunate that I put a 1 star review. Why am I doing as such? 1) as far as I have ever known they are a no kill shelter — this is not true. 2) they don’t use euthanasia as a source of last resort - they do it just to free up space. What was done to Poppi was unbelievably wrong on many levels. Poppi had a rescue willing to pull him and ensure he was put into a loving foster or adoptive family. That he was properly loved and cared for. There was quite literally not one good reason to euthanize this dog and you inhumanely stole a life — just to do it.I’d be ashamed of myself if I were in any of your shoes….

While I love what this place stands for, I did not have a good experience there. I have donated to them for years but had never adopted a pet from them. When we did go to try to adopt a kitten we had a bad experience. First off, the woman in the area where the cats were was very overbearing. She followed us around the whole time we were visiting the animals and would not stop talking. Then, she was very pushy and said we had to adopt two unless we wanted to adopt specific cats. She flat out refused to let us adopt just one kitten. I wish I would have gotten her name but we were just so shocked we wanted to get out of there. This was on July 26, 2019 in the afternoon. We went to KC Pet Project and adopted a wonderful kitten there. They were happy to let us adopt one and didn’t try to make us adopt two. We love our cat, so it worked out in the end. 😊

My wife is a travel nurse and we move about every 3 months. We were wanting a small dog to share our travels. We went to Wayside, mostly just to look around. After walking around the facility, we saw him. A small black and tan terrier mix. His name was Ferguson. We brought him out to one of the playrooms and in no time, he was sitting in my lap, like he belonged there. After about 30 seconds of intense debate, we decided he was perfect and we had to have him. A couple of hours later, he was riding in the car on his way to his new home. We have since moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho and he rode the whole way like a champ. They have an awesome dog park here and he get's so excited to go. He loves playing with the big dogs. He has a 110 pound attitude in a 10 pound body.

We had our pet cremated there and they were amazing. They helped us bring her in on a soft bed and give us time to say goodbye. Then when we got her back they give us a lot of things to remember her by and a note that made us ball our eyes out in the parking lot. The two ladies that were at the front gave us all the help we needed and helped us through the process.

I was a little unsure about Wayside Waifs at first due to some of the mixed reviews they seemed to have. But my family was interested in a sweet little chihuahua they had at their shelter. The staff was all friendly and responded back to my calls quickly (like within the hour or at least always the same day). They allowed us a trial period (slumber pawty) with the chi we were interested in to ensure we would be a good match for her due to her past situation, and included all the things we would need for her in that trial period. We ended up falling in love with her and due to us living a little over an hour away from the shelter, the staff was willing to work with my schedule in order for me to come back up there to fill out the paperwork to finalize the adoption (which we completed this past weekend). I would also like to point out that I appreciate all the COVID precautions Wayside took by doing appointment only, supplying clean writing utensils to sign in, and all staff were wearing masks. Overall we had a great experience and are so happy with our little Lupita (formerly named Cindy Lou at the shelter), she is such a sweetheart. I would def look into adopting with them in the future again!

I've used this shelter for 28 years to adopt two dogs and a cat. Each time I've adopted the service is less friendly. The reason I've gone back is that each pet I've adopted has been a healthy great companion. The reason I decided to take the time to write a review today is because I was in disbelief when I called to make an appt. to look at kittens after looking on their website. The conversation with the woman who answered the phone went something like this. Me: Yes I would like to look at some of the kittens you have for adoption and understand I will need an appt. The Lady: Great! I MUST COLLECT $29 from you in order to make an appointment to look at the kittens, and oh we really want you to choose just two (there were close to 15 kittens under the age of 6 months when I called). She continued on with her "elevator speech" until I finally interrupted her and said you mean I have to pay a nonrefundable $20 so someone can show me TWO kittens? To which she replied, but don't worry the $20 will go towards the $150 adoption fee if you decide to adopt a kitten under 6 months. I said I would look elsewhere. So I then contacted a few other shelters who had kittens, no FEE to take a look and were very friendly. I guess Wayside thinks they can get away with anything since they have are so well known and have such a nice building due to countless donations and volunteers.

Writing this review after many years of HURT. Giving one star to Wayside Waifs is being REALLY generous because I would give them -1000!!! A few years ago (2011) we lost our dog Daisy, we couldn't find her after a few weeks and we finally decided to check wayside waifs as a last resort. We not only found Daisy but she was given a different name by then. They REFUSED to give her back to us. Daisy at this point was crying for us and we were too. They claimed we would have to give them payment up front for Daisy. I will NEVER EVER EVER EVER say adopt is better than shop because it is the SAME SCAM! The SAME. This experience really left a bad taste in my mouth. We lost our dog, twice. If Wayside Waifs was a person, they would be Carol Baskin. Someone who claims to help, but really only wants money. I feel bad for all those dogs, some who could be lost dogs and/or stolen. Please everyone do research before you decided to adopt. Make sure the place you are looking into is ETHICAL. -- END RANT.

DO NOT TRUST THE WAYSIDE WAIFS VETERINARY STAFF! We had a good experience actually adopting our sweet new dog Ralph, but the vets missed a parasite (coccidia) during his exit exam. When we noticed something was wrong with our new dog and called Wayside, and we were met with apathy and disinterest with our dog's symptoms by the staff, who were very apprehensive at the idea of bringing Ralph in to see the Wayside vet. They told us to wait a few more days (the 10 day period we had to bring him back in to see their vet ever closing) and so we did. He got worse, and we finally decided to bring him in whether Wayside liked it or not. They ran tests and found the parasite and apologized for missing it the first time, but the medication they gave us was for the wrong thing. Not being vets ourselves, we went home with the meds and tried them for a week with no improvement. We called again and they once more were very rude and encouraged us not to bring him in. Once again, we did, and they discovered they made yet another mistake by giving us the wrong medication. They then gave us the correct medication, and tried to see us out, but this time we knew they were border-line incompetent and asked some questions. Through these questions, we found that though this time they gave us the correct medication, they only gave us 1/3 the correct dose. They again apologized and called out a better vet to fix the issue once and for all. While we have always supported Wayside Waifs and still support their mission, and we had a good adoption experience, the rude and incompetent nature of their veterinary staff is appalling and makes me very concerned for every dog that has ever left their facility. If they are not going to appropriately and effectively treat dogs for shelter related illnesses within the allotted 10 day period as stipulated by the adoption contract, they should just take the clause out.

We took our dog to the dog park at Wayside Waifs to try it out. 45min of play with a lovely dog and thinking we would come here going forward, a couple with a large German Shepherd came in. The GS immediately chased my dog around and around the entire area, until he pinned him against the fence and bit him in the back. My dog came running to me with a large, bloody hole in his back and crying in pain. The owners apologized, said it wasn't a bad bite, and made their dog sit next to mine to "apologize". My dog was terrified of him and we left immediately. We told the lady at the front desk what happened and she told us to fill out an incident report, which we did. She asked the name of the dog and we told her. She said "ah, yes we've had issues with him before." The GS had a shock collar on but whether or not it was used is unknown to us. It should not have been in the park to begin with if it's aggressive and can't be controlled. Especially when it's already had previous instances of aggression with other dogs in the park. The lady at the desk told us the owners were some of the facility's largest financial sponsors so nothing would be done about the dog being allowed in. We took my dog to the vet straight away, costing us almost $300. I emailed Wayside Waifs a few weeks later about the incident and they offered us a month's membership to the dog park. Why would I bring my dog here again? My dog has never been the same since this traumatic experience and for this reason alone I will never return to Wayside Waifs.

When I 1st showed up my experience was great. The front desk lady and the girl who helped with my meet and greet were very friendly. I picked a dog and asked to put a hold on her (just a few hours) since I wasn't prepared for a smaller dog-- I was expecting to get an older/larger dog and ended up with a puppy. I went ahead and did the beginning of the adoption process since they already printed my paperwork, and I said I'll return in a few hours after I return the crate I had and pick up a few things for the puppy. Came back less than 3 hours later and it took forever for someone to finish out the adoption process with me. There were plenty of people available and no one else was waiting/in line. I was kind of agitated by this seeing as my file had already been started so I should have been able to pick up where I left off. Other than that the people were friendly, the facility was clean, the staff was just really slow.

Great experience with this shelter. Staff was knowledgeable about animals and very helpful with any questions we had. We left with (Scout), now Nova, and she has been a great addition to our family. I will recommend Wayside Waifs to all my friends and family.

I adopted two cats from here. (first on 10-19-18 and second one 10-29-18)I’ve bonded so much with the first kitty, who I named Bolt. I got him for my birthday, hes a striped tabby. The second one is named Moon and hes a blue siamese, he’s absolutely gorgeous. They were both neutered and fully vaccinated as well!

I adopted our dog from here. That experience was fine, but after they got my money, they have completely ignored any and all inquiries from me. They are so rude and unprofessional plus their vets are incompetent. They say if the dog doesn’t work out, please bring them back but I’ve had friends who have surrendered animals they adopted from them due to behavior issues that weren’t disclosed and other things and they were so rude to them. Go somewhere else. It’s not worth it.

As a previous volunteer I feel that the volunteer training as well as the process is greatly flawed. I didn't volunteer often but I feel that my time I did give was not appreciated. I volunteered at another animal shelter in another state and have something to compare my experience. There are no mirrors of the walks so as a volunteer you have no clue if another dog is coming around the corner when you are walking a dog.In my other shelter there was a system that as a new volunteer you only would walk and socialize with a certain temperament of dog depending on your comfort level as well as hours volunteered. At this shelter they gave us a teddy bear to pretend to put the leash on and was approved to work all level of dogs. With their process as well as the large size of the dogs I would often counter with the puppies and any small mild mannered dog they would have. One day I got an award phone call indirectly pushing me to interact with all dogs......Not getting paid as a volunteer so I won't volunteer to do anything that I see could be potentially harmful due to lack of controlled processes, so since I didn't feel fully welcomed or appreciated I haven't returned since.I have mixed feelings of if I would recommend anyone to adopt here due to the volunteer program

We got a dog from ASPCA and wanted a friend for our new dog so a few months later we went to wayside waifs and found what we that was a good match. However the new dog we got started getting aggressive with our original dog attacking him. So we called wayside waifs to see if they had an exchange policy like ASPCA dose because that want you to get the perfect pet for you family. Wayside waifs dose not and if it doesn't work out you need to pay them to return the dog! I would say go to ASPCA they are a lot nicer staff and want to help both you and the animals they have.Side note I gave the other dog we couldn't keep to my mom and the dog is doing great at her house.

No Compassion with Pet MemorialsI called this morning when they opened and asked the receptionist if they still offered euthanasia and pet cremations. She told me yes and she would give the person who ran the department a message to contact me a.s.a.p. I was told she would be in around 10:00am. At 1:00pm I called and talked to the head of the department who told me she never got the massage and "sorry our vet is booked up today". So we waited all morning for nothing and the vet cannot make an emergency appointment for this kind of situation? I guess Wayside has no compassion for a dying animal. This ends my financial support for this organization. Humane...I think not!
J Phillips
Would give them a zero if possible. Perhaps Wayside waifs is trying to get rid of animals too fast? My daughter adopted a puppy and I went with her. First puppy was not mentioned as part pitbull up front and she opted for another. Puppy was listless and threw up on the way home. Also, found ticks on her and just turned around and took her back. They said they couldn't take her back and watch her to see if she was okay because she was now adopted (for all of 2 1/2 hours). Gave her a tick treatment after they found more and handed her back. Wouldn't eat, was listless, threw up more and was returned to them less than 24 hours after adoption. Parvo. Would go with your gut and be very leary of a place that tells you up front not to put the puppy on the ground at their facility because "there is Parvo all over here". Will not take the puppy back nor adopt another dog from this facility. After a very thorough email with details of issues, adoption fee was returned.

My dog has never been the same since this traumatic experience and for this reason alone I will never return to Wayside Waifs.

the most impressive animal shelter I have ever seen in my whole entire life!!! and I have been to a lot of shelters in my day. oh my gosh this place is nice. the staff is friendly and cares so much about animals. they keep things clean and handle the animals regulary. they even have half price adoption deals at times which is really nice. I don't know if I will get any more animals than the cat I already have now that i adopted from them but if I do it will be from wayside waifs!!

I adopted a 2 month old puppy a couple weeks ago and is the best rescue dog I have ever seen!! This puppy loves me and is very attached to me. I can not ask for a better dog!! I would definitely chose a rescue dog over a purebred dog. They are so much better dogs. Most people turn them down because they think that they have health problems. (blah blah blah) I bet you that these dogs at Wayside Waifs are much healthier than purebreds. **My favorite breeds are rescues**

We stop by every time we are traveling in the area. It is an awesome place and the people are so nice. You can just see the love they have for the animals. Our dogs love the dog park too. Tori knows long before we get to it where we are headed and she has only been there a few times. They do so much for animals this is one charity I love giving to.

I adopted two kittens from here and they were up for adoption while being diagnosed with a respiratory infection. I don’t know why they hadn’t helped them get healthy before the adoption, however they gave me eye drops and enough of another medication to heal them lasting a month, even though they have a 10 day period to bring them back which doesn’t make sense because we wouldn’t have been able to see any progress. After that didn’t work I took them to a vet twice and they diagnosed them with a herpes virus in cats that can cause sneeze attacks and watery/blurry eyes. $600 dollars later they were still ill and I brought them back to Wayside Waifs hoping they could come up with a second opinion and fix their mistake of not helping them properly in the first place. After calling 3 times and being put on hold for over 20 minutes each time, I walked in with the cats they looked at me like I was dumb and told me “they aren’t open to the public”, I immediately got upset considering I adopted them from Wayside Waifs and brought the folder of proof of all the medical expenses and illnesses that I have gone through. With this said I will never be adopting an animal from here again.

My boyfriend and I went in a couple months ago looking for a dog, and we adopted a 5 year old lab mix that had been there for a month. That’s what it had said on the website and on the tag on the kennel he was in. They also said he was healthy and was just recovering from kennel cough. After taking him to the vet Wayside Waifs recommended, we were told he was not 5, but around 12. TWELVE. It wasn’t kennel cough that he had, but laryngeal paralysis, onset with old age. He also had severe arthritis, bladder issues, and other issues that would cost us so much money to fix. The clerks and cashiers at Pet Smart were even able to tell that our dog was older than 5. It’s safe to say that what we thought was a reputable establishment either lied to us about the age of our dog or was not thorough enough in his check up to realize what was going on. We love our dog dearly and are grateful to have him, but we will never come back to Wayside Waifs.

It's all about the animals and getting them in homes. Wayside Waifs is my go to for adoption and volunteering.

Back in the 90's, the adoption process was easy and quick. Fast forward to today, it's like buying a car - all day process.I adopted a dog late April. In July, we noticed a large lump. Had the dog looked at by three local vets. Was told the dog has cancer and would need to be put down or I could spend a huge chunk of money on biopsies and surgeries.Since we hadn't had the dog long, vet told me they would not do anything and recommend that I take the dog back to wayside waifs, tell them what was going on and if they had any questions or problems they can call vet directly.I was off, so I went ahead and took the dog back to wayside waifs. Immediately upon entering the lady asked if it had been more than 10 days since adoption and if so I couldn't bring the dog back. She didn't even ask why I was there or what was wrong.I just interrupted and asked her to listen. I told her I just came from local vet, described the problem and told her if they had more questions they were to call my vet as reccomend. The lady went and down the hall and brought back wayside waifs vet. I preceded to tell him exactly what my vet said and told him if he had questions to call my vet.He told me he was the vet who looked at and worked on dog upon his arrival to the facility. He seen the large lump, size of my hand, on the dog, but said that didn't exist when he was orginally seen and there was nothing they could do now. He refused to call my vet.I'm like the middle man, not sure what to do. He could have worked with local vet to determine a course of action for the dog. That refusal resulted in the loss of very long time donator.Dog is still alive. He can't chew well so food is softened for him. He can't go on walks because he collapses and I can't pick him up. Not sure how long he'll make it.Autistic son asked and asked for a dog. Got him a dog and now I'm not sure who needs more attention.

Becareful when trying to rescue a dog. About 3 weeks ago we adopted our first pet and I was told to bring the dog back ANYTIME if things don't work out well at home. Over a week ago our son was bitten in his hand and suffered a scratch in his forehead. Other minor instances occurred where the dog grawls and tries to bite so now we don't feel safe with our dog anymore. I've been trying to schedule an appointment to surrender him a Saturday or Sunday since I am out of the city during the week. Its like talking to a wall!! And by the way, check every thing about the health condition, our dog had 2 major health issues and they only spoke with us of 1 issue. We learned of the 2nd issue after getting an email from the health insurance.I understand that probably most personnel are volunteers but the adoption and admissions "specialists" are complete unprofessionals.

Shhh... Don't tell my family that I am on their computer. I am a 2 month old shepard and retriever mix and I used to be a guest at Wayside Waifs until my new family came and got me. When I was there my name was Puck but my new family calls me Walter or Wally. I was at Wayside for a couple of weeks and other than being noisy cuz the other dogs liked to talk a lot, it wasn't too bad. All the people there were really nice and they made sure that I was fed and walked and clean. Some of them even gave me extra snuggles. It's been almost a week with my new family and they are teaching me new tricks and giving me lots of cuddles. Thanks Wayside for putting me with this family.

Incredibly rude staff. I simply asked if there were any small breeds that were going to be available soon. They refused to answer me, & referred me to their broken website with nonfunctional pet alerts. I do not like being discriminated against because I am handicapped. Wayside Waifs, you should be ashamed of your staff's conduct. It is extremely difficult for me to travel, let alone go an hour out of town for the privilege & honor of being discriminated against & being treated like the manure that your staff refuses to scoop from their animals' cages. Wayside Waifs, you should be ashamed of your tolerance of your prejudicial, discriminatory staff. For shame.

While I love the facility, I am not so happy with treatment I have had when looking to adopt. Recently, my son and I went in to look at adult cats' especially since these are harder to place. We got there at 7:30 pm, signs on the door clearly state no adoptions will occur after 7 pm which was fine. First thing said by the initial front desk lady was telling us no more adoptions but we were welcome to look. She was nice. Get to the 2nd desk, first thing was that we couldn't adopt tonight. I told her the lady at the 1st reception told me and it is also on their door. She said " well I just didn't want you to get attached and not be able to adopt". I said that was fine, I understood. Then we enter the cat adoption area. Yet a 3rd employee says " can I help you?" I said "we are just looking at the cats" he harshly says "well you can't adopt!". That was it. Enough was enough. Never felt so unwelcome before as I did 11/24/17 . I decided I will go to KC pet project or Belton . First, LET THE MAIN FRONT TELL PEOPLE, no need to make people feel guilty for wanting to look. I live close, we could have decided on a cat and came back at 10 am sat. 2nd there are nicer ways to tell people." thank you so much for choosing Wayside, unfortunately our adoption process stops at 7 pm, but you are welcome to visit the pets". Very disappointed.

If there was zero stars I would give it my boy was in there care I got him back with a tight collar and his throat damaged but they tell me it's my pet and that there was no record of injury just because there was no record means nothing and yes he is mine but was under there care and yesterday when I got him he didn't bark or anything like usual I got him to try and bark and u can tell something is serious wrong. Someone jerked him around or something because he didn't sound like this a week ago

We had a wonderful experience. The staff were patient and kind. It was definitely love at first sight with our fur baby. We had an instant connection.

I have adopted one of my dogs from them and have had multiple of others adopt from this place. I have a pit mix named cab and he is absolutely amazing! They periodically have called over the years and checked on him and made sure he was doing okay! I have seen some posts that say they didnt want to see there dogs again because they were sick or didnt take in a certain animal that was picked up off the street! If you had ever been there you know that 1 they will take your animal back IF IT IS ILL AND YOU go to a certified vet on that sheet of paper with 100 vets on it and 2 how do they know that the stray isnt your pet you just want to get rid of? have you ever been in the back room to see all the animals they have back there? people would literally just drop animals off there once they didnt want them! This place has been awesome for me and has always answered any question I have ever had (and I have had my pit for 4 years now) I will adopt from them again when one of my 2 curent dogs pass and I live 3 hours away!

We adopted a puppy and was told he was healthy. Went home and you could tell something was wrong. He wouldn’t eat anything , he threw up on the hour, no energy. Took him to a vet and he had parvo and worms. We surrendered him back to the vet and they were extremely mad about that (like it’s my fault you sold me a sick dog and told me he was healthy) and refused to give money back and just said I can adopt another dog for the same price (ya right). All the dogs there look like they are starving and that’s a big sign of parvo.... please don’t adopt from them. They should be shut down and the city will be getting a call about them ASAP

Called to set up an appointment for one of the dogs, took over a day to call me back. Once they did call me back the representative was super rude on the phone and seemed like she was trying to talk me out of getting the dog all together with the description she gave of the dog and the questions she was asking. Not very professional and kind of sad when dogs need homes and they have people like that representing them hopefully they get better help there soon so some dogs can find some good homes.

Huge shelter with obviously loved animals. A great place to get your new best friend.
