We had a stray cat who showed up seriously injured one winter. He was scared and really hurt. We put out food but he didn't trust anyone. Over a couple of years, yes years, he slowly started trusting us. He really grew on me, but we would only see him maybe once every week or so. Sometimes we would see he had fresh wounds. We nicknamed him Job, after the long-suffering Job if the Bible. He even had trouble eating and breathing due to past injuries. We finally managed to take him in to be checked out. I dropped him off here one day. The next day I called to see how he was doing and what they found. I was informed he had far more serious injuries than what could be seen. He was in constant pain and they could do nothing for him. He was laid to rest.It broke my heart, this cat, who was always hurt, always sweet, always scared. He was so important to me. I am still sad and it's been 2 years now. I am saying all this so that you understand how real it is when I say the ONLY comfort I have from all this is that, due to my other interactions with those who work here, I know that he was cared for during his last day here. He was not simply dismissed. They did what they thought was best, and they did it with kindness and compassion in their hearts. I personally cannot give higher praise than that.

My family had a very good experience adopting our sweet girl, Bailey Rose from this shelter. She is the perfect dog; easy to train, loyal, loving, and she gets along with every adult, child, and animal she meets. Kootneai Humane society rescued her as a 5 month old pup from a shelter in Texas where she would've been killed. It breaks my heart to think that someone would have wasted this precious girls life. She is now 9 months old and she is my best friend, she goes with me everywhere and is beginning service training🥰🥰

I can't say enough good things about Companions. They care, the staff is amazing, they look out for the well being of every animal that comes in. Jess is wonderful, all the staff there are, you can tell they love what they do. ❤️

We've been kitty owners since 2011 when we got our first pet. She was a stray, and from there, we've taken care of the neighborhood stray cats and have kept many as our pets. With the very recent loss of our two first cats back to back, one from sickness and old age, and the other from surgery complications, there was such a heavy emptiness. We've been long time supporters of CAC (when it was still KHS too!) and I am very proud to say today was the first time we adopted a shelter cat! We went in Tuesday to donate some food and see the kennel we adopted. There was a lanky fluffy black kitty who was gripping onto me through his kennel, and I knew in my heart he had to be ours. We went home, and after a bit of deliberation, decided to bring the sweet boy into the family. I made the appointment and we officially adopted him today, February 24th, 2024 and he's adjusting wonderfully already and is such a lovebug! The experience was fantastic and it filled my heart with so much joy seeing how passionate the staff are about animals. It was a very quick and easy process too, and since he's an elderly gentleman, didn't cost much. Welcome home Billi, we love you so much already.

We chose to get our female sheltie spayed here because it was 1/3 the cost of vets in town. I was somewhat worried they would be rough with my dog and just rush her through like an “animal sterilization factory”.Could not have been more wrong. They were incredibly kind, compassionate, and competent and it’s obvious they know what they are doing. They stitched her up really well and sent us home with 3 days of pain meds (Carprofen). I highly recommend spay/neuter services here. Only downside is the waitlist is a few months long.

The team at kootenai humane society were excellent: answering questions, courteous and helpful while maintaining a safe environment for those meeting rescues and others dropping off pups for some of their free programs. The huskies we came to evaluate for NW Snowdogs Rescue were much improved in health and happiness. They were gaining weight and playful under kootenai humane societies supervision and care.Check out their new building coming soon in Hayden!

These people seem to think they are the only ones who can possibly understand dog behavior no matter how much experience a family may have, so they will determine whether or not you will be allowed to adopt a dog based on what they believe is a good fit. My family has dealt with multiple different behavior issues and would not have long term issues with any dog. I have never returned an animal or given it away in all my 54 years and only feed our dogs the best quality air dried food available, at quite a cost. That little dog would have had a wonderful, loving life with us. I find it extremely offensive that these people get to have that kind of control. We were never treated this way when it was the Humane Society. They were happy to have people wanting to take pets home. I am disgusted by management. Do yourself a favor and find a free dog that needs a good home (Craigslist) instead of giving these control freaks the time of day. Vicki

ADOPTED OUT A DOG BEHIND OUR BACKS!!! I called and showed up multiple times for months after being told that we were the only ones on the list to adopt this particular dog during the quarantine period. Very disappointed in this shelter. Would not ever recommend them to ANYONE

I can speak on the cat area since I have worked closely with the cats/kittens. They have a dedicated staff who works tirelessly to care for and treat the cats who come in. They work overtime bringing emaciated kittens home and bottle babies. They have fosters who they work closely with and train to ensure all of the kittens recieve the best care. They educate themselves and care deeply about the quality of life for all of the cats, kittens, and small animals. It's hard and not always rewarding work, but they show up everyday and give it their all. If you want to make a difference please volunteer to foster or to help clean in the mornings. You will see first hand just how loved these cats are.

I brought in a kitty I rescued a little while back and Tessa was very knowledgeable on the next steps to take and definitely gives you the best options for you and your furry friend. I have another kitty I rescued recently and I will be bringing him in to her as well! Really a nice facility.

Kind and devoted staff! Great help finding our new family member: Sammi. She was a horribly matted, skin-and-bones stray flown in from CA... and we were lucky to be the first to take her out for a meet-and-greet.In less than 48 hours she was at ease in her new home, meeting many new human friends and sharing space and food with her new sister.I strongly doubt she could have felt as comfortable with us and our old girl so quickly unless she had been treated with love and kindness during her transition. They do great work there and we thank them very very much!

This place saves so many of the communities animals. They take strays, animals that people are unable to care for, animals that have become homeless, kittens, etc. The employees treat them like their own. They take home kittens and bottle feed them over night when they don't have fosters. They only have a limited number of kennels so they have to take in the animals from a wait list or will take them in emergency situations. If you want to make a difference donate or volunteer. There is so much work to do and it is not always rewarding work, but the people who do it do it for the love of the animals. Be kind and do your part.

I was planning on making a substantial donation to this shelter in lieu of purchasing fireworks this year since I know how much fireworks upset my own dog and lots of others. However, after reading several reviews, I will NOT be making my donation here. And based upon the comments, I would definitely fire this awful gray-haired lady. She’s most certainly costing you business.

It looks like a good establishment and they do take care of their animals. We were left with a negative overall experience. The man with an accent was very helpful and friendly. The older gray haired women was rather cantankerous and combative. I genuinely feel sorry for the pets in her “care”.

I went here to get my cat spayed. During the pick up process, one of the elderly ladies treated us like we were all stupid, even after we explained that we've done this before. My cat quickly developed an infection, and luckily, they were willing to give her a check-up. Apparently, she was allergic to the sutures, so they gave her an antibiotic shot. When we got her home, I noticed the sutures were really close to the surface & looked out of place. She's still getting infection from the spots where they pulled the sutures up, and now, one of the ends is poking out. I've had two cats spayed/neutered at a different vet, and even after excessive licking on both their parts, they never reacted like that. I will show a photo of what's going on with my cat's tummy, so be warned if your stomach is sensitive.

Thank you Animal Companions for facilitating the adoption of my new kitty companion, Nigel. We're bonding wonderfully.

The amount of love that flows through this rescue is incredible! The animals are very well taken care of and they do their very best to find only the best homes for them. The staff and volunteers are made up of people who have a deep love and understanding for these rescue animals! Our 9 year old boy, Angus, is one of the best things to ever happen to us!

They spayed my dog. The place was very clean, professional and helpful. Staff caring and efficient.

We had the best experience adopting our sweet girl Lassie now known as MacKenzie. Easy and fast. Shes the best girl and we got lots of little gifts and extras with her.

If you’re looking for a cheap place to get your animals spayed/neutered then this is the place. Besides that this place was absolutely horrible! Terrible costumer service, they’ll try to belittle you if you’re young, and they’ll add additional charges for random things even if you already paid additional fees. The ladies at the front desk are so mean and disrespectful. They target young adults and try to scam them for more money. Belittle you by saying “do you need to call your mommy” and “are you sure you can afford that”. I definitely don’t recommend this place to anyone and I would not trust them with your pets.

Went in today to look at kittens. We recently lost our baby to kidney failure and my girls were so excited to go there. We were directed to cat room and processed to look and pet kittens. Not only were my teenage girls were so excited and the kittens were so happy to have us in their room. About 30 seconds in the room a lady rudely asked us to leave because we didn't have an appointment. I was shocked! Here my kids are I were there to possibly adopt a new family member yet they turned away from even looking. No one was there looking at cats or kittens, it was empty. Not only did we leave sad and empty handed but I will never go back. Their staff were so rude! Just a plan sad situation! We could have have them an excellent loving home

I called and spoke with someone who said we could come in and have a meet and greet with the dog we had submitted an application for. A 20 minute drive just to be told that we could look at her through the window. I was very understanding with my response, and scheduled an appointment with the front desk for the next day at 1pm. I drove 20 minutes just to be told there was another appointment and, that there was no appointment scheduled for me. Instead of the gal that does the scheduling, Christina, coming out to have that conversation, she sent two different people out here to deliver the bad news until I asked for a manager. The first gal she sent was kind and showed empathy, the second with piercings all over her face showed zero empathy. The manager comes out and says that she told me this and that which was a crock. This place has gotten to be quite ridiculous, never answering their phones and never calling back when they say they will. Check out other adoption agencies, there are plenty more in our area.

Came out to see dogs with a friend who is looking to adopt. The staff in the kennel were kind and informative. She was told us she needed to fill out an application before we could actually meet a dog. We left but then decided to return so we could get a closer look at one of the small dogs. When we returned the woman at the front desk with straight grey hair in scrubs, who wasn't kind when we first arrived, was so rude and unkind that we never even finished the application. We questioned if we could see the dog and she said something to the effect that it says on the website you have to wait and someone will call in about a week or so.My friend also had a volunteer application pending but in no way would someone want to be there with that kind of person. You not only lost an adoption but also a volunteer. That woman does not belong with people or animals.

I’ve been looking at these reviews and several months ago I found some information about a great number of dogs being rescued that were at the Companions Animal Center, formerly Kootenai Animal Shelter and being the dog lover that I am wanted to make a sizable donation to help with the care of these dogs. I called to get some information and found the person I spoke to was rude and had little information, this was so disappointing and I did not make the donation. Eight years ago I adopted my Pippa dog when she was 4 years old when it was Kootenai, she will be 13 years old next year.

I highly recommend adopting from here. This shelter is different from most since you have to fill out an application and wait for them to call you to make an appointment to visit with an animal of your choice. All of this information is clearly provided on their website. Filling out an application was quick and received a call that day. The staff was wonderful and friendly throughout my visit. The new building was spacious and clean.Overall I had a lovely experience adopting Joji from here. Thank you!!

This shelter is fantastic! They deserve all the funding possible. I have had a few experiences with Kootenai, and the staff are very caring. Please adopt a pet and support all their hard, compassionate work.Update: I have changed my review because they have gone so downhill without David being in charge of rescues. I have been rescuing cats for 5 years, and in all that time and all the cats I have saved, I could only take two to kootenai. They actually were mean to me for being out there doing their job of rescuing cats. If you want to rescue a cat, don't go to the shelter. Look up rescues because they are actually out there doing the work. Shelters are all about the turnover money. What a shame.

Found a kitten wondering my neighborhood and needing a home (about 3 or 4 months old) called to see if they would be able to intake since I have 2 dogs and I'm allergic, called multiple times just to get rude people and someone even telling me I was irresponsible for taking in a cat from the street if I was allergic. Called another time to get information about possibly rehoming her and getting her spayed, but yet again met with people who acted like I was an inconveniencing for calling. Used to be a great place with lots of happy people! Now just an overly strict breeding ground for angry people. Hard to believe that people who are all about saving and helping animals could be such jerks! Will never give my buisness, nor donate to such a distasteful humane society.
Christyne Powers
I adopted my newest forever fur baby today and the staff was great and you can tell they really strive to find the best homes possible for their animals.
Samantha Spraker
We went there to look and play with kittens when we got there we told them that they told us where everything was and to go in back we were supper excited. We go back open one of the rooms to look and play with all the kitten and one of the ladies say we can not play with them we need an appointment to adopt or see anything. Maybe they would have more animals passing threw and going to homes if you didn’t need an appointment for everything. Don’t see the problem with sitting on the ground letting the kittens run and be all excited to play.
Sonja Rinehart (Twinkie, bognia)
Was 100% awesome and totally worth all the kindness they returned my dog and didn't charge me after he was stolen and I had to drive 1300 hundred miles round trip to get him back and he's my service animal and best friend

They are an amazing and friendly team of volunteers. They offer a No-kill shelter and it is refreshing to see how well they care for the animals. I suggest anyone who can either shops at the humane society thrift store, donates or volunteers when they can as this is a low cost and community friendly shelter which truly sets the bar very high for other shelters of similar status. I bring feral cats here for spaying/neutering and our family often donates to the thrift store as well as shops as they have awesome products and it all goes to helping the animals in the shelter. Like Bob Barker always said "Have your pets spayed or neutered".
Daniel Dison
The outside seemed a little sketchy when pulling up, but the staff was incredibly professional and nice. The facility on the inside was clean and organized. I was pleasantly surprised based on my initial thoughts from driving into the parking lot. They are raising money for a new facility and are more than halfway to their goal. I recommend that you go donate, they deserve to have a brand new facility. This is a benefit to our community.

Spaying/neutering/vaccinating your pets is very important. So if this low cost clinic is right for your budget, then I wouldn’t deter you. However, because they are low cost, do not expect any bells and whistles and prepare yourself to advocate for your pets comfort post op. I took my cat in for a spay on Jan 3rd and after getting home with her that evening, realized that I hadn’t been given any pain meds for her. I was very worried and upset as my cats spay was a little more complicated and required a larger incision. I called first thing the next morning but heard nothing. I don’t live close to their clinic, so I decided because my cat was in a lot of pain to get her meds through another doctor. The doctor was appalled that she hadn’t been sent home with any meds. It’s human to error and being a former vet tech myself, decided they must have just forgotten to send them home with her. It happens. But the kicker for me was when I finally received a voicemail from the humane society clinic. The man said they don’t send meds home for males, but females should receive meds. He didn’t know what my cat was but I could come get meds if it was a girl.In my voicemail I had CLEARLY stated my cat was a female spay and I was very concerned she was in pain due to her more complicated surgery. So he obviously didn’t listen to the voicemail and at that point my cat was 3 days post op. I have noticed a lot of complaints from others on this site and they all refer to the same lady and her name is Grace. Short hair dyed dark. Avoid her at all cost! Nothing like trying to go adopt a sweet animal to bring home and love and be refused on the basis of Grace's opinion...guess she'd rather let the animals live in a cage for the rest of their life. How sad. It's not your job to be judge and jury, Grace, maybe you should start having some humanity towards the human race, just saying...

I love this place a lot. Animals are well taken care of and most staff is very friendly! There is one short haired brunette woman that I’ve always had a problem with though. Recently my cat ran away. She was my best friend and it took a lot for me to go out looking for another kitten. When I told her my cat ran away, instead of a sympathetic “I’m so sorry for your loss” she glared and said “well I don’t know if I’ll let you adopt another cat then. I don’t want another cat going missing” even though we thoroughly explained that I was not even the one home when my cat ran away. A family member let her out by mistake. She’s been rude to me on multiple occasions but this ruined me. I considered not even getting another cat because of her even though I need an emotional service animal for mental illness. If she can’t be as nice to the people as she is to the animals, she needs to get out.

When I had to go to KBH and be hospitalized for over a week, I had to give my animals to animal control to keep them alive because I didn't have anyone to come over to take care of them, and the animal control people sent them here. The humane society worked with me, and were going to release them to me for nothing. wWith boosters, and even gave me a cat crate, all for free. I was so moved by their kindness, I donated $250 to them. They're absolutely AMAZING people with the purest hearts I've ever experienced in any shelter. If you're going to adopt, come here. They genuinely care not only for animals, but for people, too. I can't even tell you how grateful I am to these people. They literally saved my life. My animals are my reason to stay alive, and they made sure I could keep my babies. Thank you, Kootenai Humane Society! You are forever a part of my heart. ❤️❤️❤️ I won't ever forget what you did for me and my animals! 🐾

I took in some feral cats we found to have them fixed. Appointments were 1 week out and the day of drop off and pick up were quick and hassle free. The facility is clean and the front desk ladies are all very kind and obviously love the animals.

Always super friendly and helpful. They do a lot of good work for this community and I'm happy they're getting their new building That is much needed. Only place to adopt in this area! Also no kill shelter.

I've owned cats for 40 years. I only keep two cats, and when one of them passes, I look to the shelters for adoption. My oldest cat of 15 years passed last week, and I came in looking to adopt his successor. I became interesred in a 1 year old female that seemed like a good match for my 4 year old calico at home. The lady acted like I was there wanting to play with them when I asked her for more info on the cat. She then went to the back, came back and in a very short and condescending manner says "she is bonded to [some other cat] and I had to take both or none. Really?? It seems to me like they might place more animals if they didnt force people to adopt two when they are looking for one. Very dissapointed and a bit insulted.

Great place to pick up a new pet or have a addition to your family of pets. They have very good staff their take excellent care of their pets and a very friendly and easy to work with you. They are very experienced and are very helpful in helping you pick out what you need. They also work with people's budgets they told me and also help people with Veterinary Services of some sorts. They do require you to make an appointment for the veterinary type services for your animal.Great place have gotten lots of pets through them.Jerry

Great staff. We adopted our newest family member last week and he is perfect for us!

We decided it was time for our daughter to get a dog. We didn't want a puppy and decided that a rescue was the way to go. We really like most of the people that are there , except that one girl, she's a bit of a b****. But we didn't let that spoil our visit. We visited with the cats and rabbits and rats, yes rats, and made our way to the dogs. There we found the cutest little 2 year old terrier/jack mix. Our daughter fell in love and after walking her outside and getting to know her, we did the paperwork and brought her home. It's been a week so far and they couldn't be happier! We have made donations to the Humane Society before, and we encourage you to make any donations you can, be it pet toys, food, or money. You can help keep them operating, and just many one day, your donation will make a little girl and a little dog very happy.
Tara R
The staff was both kind and helpful! We left with a new family member after looking for over a year!Update:Thank you to everyone being so accommodating when we "knew she was the one"! We were right after 6 months she is still quirky and fits in perfectly with our bunch!

This place is the worst place in the world to get a pet as far as staff goes. I feel sorry for the pets under their care. Staff members are extremely rude and act as if you are not worth the time of day. Strongly suggest you find your loving pet elsewhere. The most resent post I can see is 16 months ago. Obviously they have had a staff change in that time.
Daniel Connacher
It's so important to support the Kootenai Humane Society and what they do there. I've adopted three animals from there all of them absolutely wonderful love them with all my heart. And all of my animals are awesome because of the love and care they give them at the Kootenai Humane Society. They don't just shove them in a cage and feed and water them they actually care for the animals and love them and take them for walks and pet them and give them attention. Because they are a no-kill shelter animals are sent from all over the country to them I adopted one from Texas. And right now they have too many kittens and can't take any more cats in and they need help not only financially but also adoptions. they could use some people to step up and take some kittens off there roster. Even just stopping by and dropping off V bucks is a big difference to these people and of course they take volunteers to help care for the animals walking them cleaning cages and what not. And that's why it's so important to help organizations like these people. If not only to take some of the workload off but also helps the animal adjust better to its condition at the shelter but also helps them adjust quicker at their new forever home. And let's face it these animals deserve the best from us because they've been usually seeing the worst from us.

We've adopted two cats over the years from the humane society. The staff is so friendly and clearly love what they do. They helped us choose the right kittens to add to our family and I can't speak highly enough of them!

I got my kitty Scarlett form the shelter here. They have many cats and kittens to choose from. The staff is very informative and helpful. They also do a follow-up call to see how things are going. They also offer reduced cost vaccinations. I also like that this is a no kill shelter.
Sydnee Henry
I highly recommend adopting from here. This shelter is different from most since you have to fill out an application and wait for them to call you to make an appointment to visit with an animal of your choice. All of this information is clearly provided on their website. Filling out an application was quick and received a call that day. The staff was wonderful and friendly throughout my visit. The new building was spacious and clean.Overall I had a lovely experience adopting Joji from here. Thank you!!
Debbie Montana

Friendly and hospitable staff. The furry friends look very well cared for…

This rating is not on the spay for my two cats that was done. It's on the lack of communication between me and the staff. The website says you can get pain meds for the cats if asked for before surgery. The staff says no meds are ever given to cats because they don't need them. Yet spayed dogs do. WHAT? I am now suppose to go to my vet and get the drugs. But that will be a few weeks out, but by then they will not be needed. I had called twice on getting the drugs ,but was never told to go to my vet to get them. This appointment was made two months ago. The website needs changed and the staff needs to be trained as there is no none.

I had sent in a pre-adoption questionaire for a specific cat about a week ago. I never got a call back. The cat I wanted was still on their site a week later, so I sent a second questionaire in and they called me back the next day to set up an appointment. On their site they state adoptions are by appointment only and that they do not do holds. The day before my appointment they called to tell me the cat I wanted was adopted but they had a different cat available. I was very dissapointed, before I decided to make the long trip there I looked into reviews and found several other people having this problem with them multiple times. Based on my experience just trying to make an apt and the previous reviews we've decided not to adopt from here.

The staff Took the time to tell us all about each cat , Very friendly staff. My friend choose her new forever boy cat , well, actually he definitely chose my friend, he's very sweet and definitely loving. We are taking him home !!

Cats looked healthy and as happy as possible. Came to see the dogs and there were 2 available to adopt but there were many on their website that said they were available for adoption. Staff didn't greet us, just stared at us as we came in. They were slightly rude when we asked if there were dogs for adoption to look at. Their adoption fees were a little too high. I have had similar experiences with the staff being rude in the past, but I have only gone in maybe once every 3-5 yrs since I was a child.

Vets were fantastic. So efficient and my dog who typically doesn't like strangers loved them. Ladies at front desk were a bit testy and made comments about my newly adopted dog barking... I figured it'd be ok because they work with animals. She's a rescue and I just got her 3 days ago. Takes a while to aclimate her and train her.

I am a huge lover of animals and love supporting our local shelter. Adopting through KHS is also very easy and they make sure you try to bond with the animal before leaving. Grace and all the countless hard working volunteers that help keep this place running are amazing and deserve much more credit from the county for all that they do!

First time I've seen a shelter where you can't even come look at an animal you want to adopt. You have to wait a week to be contacted, and then another week before you can even go in. Good luck getting an animal you see on their site.

Where I got my current kitty of now 14 years and he is still very happy with his current home and well cared for. Glad that this place is around and non kill shelter like it is :) Keep up the good work and care of these animals. Hope they all find happy homes to live in.

If I could give them less stars I would... we went in at 530 with our dog to adopt a dog that we had already picked out online. When we asked if we could start the adoption process they said no and that we would need to bring any other dogs in the house. We then informed him that we already had him on the car and wanted to at least start the paperwork. They were extremely rude and wouldn't even let us put a hold on the dog and said we have to come back the next day. As soon as I got off work I went back to the humane society with my dog to adopt the dog we had picked out. As I walked in they were finishing up the adopting process for the dog we wanted. We were extremely angry because we had tried to at least put a hold on him the night before and they refused. I know that they put holds on dogs as I have done it before with my cat. So I asked about another dog and we went out to see how they play. While out there I mentioned MANY times that I have 2 cats at home that I have rescued and if he was good with cats. Multiple times throughout the ENTIRE adoption process I asked and they assured me over and over that he loves cats. Fast forward to when we brought him home he immediately went to attack the cats and was growling and pulling to get them. Later that night at petco we happen to run into the previous owners of the dog. They told us how he is supposed to be on medication for his hips and that they had given that to them for his new owners but we were never given medication nor did they mention anything about that. Not a big deal we can take him to the vet. Next she told us how he killed one of her cats and that is part of the reason they had to give him back. She stated how he had to separated from them at all times or he would try to get them. I am heart broken that I took this poor sweet dog and confused him because we are unable to keep him. If they would have told us in the beginning that he couldn't live with cats he never would have been and option for us. I have called multiple trainers asking if he can be trained but because he is 8 years old they said more than likely not. We got him very underweight, very dirty and stressed out of his mind. We will be trying to find a new home for him but I will not be bringing him back to that horrible humane society. As someone who has volunteered at a humane society before I am heart broken and appalled at the way they treat the dogs and how they can lie just to get a dog adopted knowing that The new owners are unable to get a refund. Not only that but when we were there the night before there was dog pee in almost ever dog kennel there and it was obvious they had no intention of cleaning it before they left. If you don't love animals don't work at a shelter.

Had to surrender my pup. The staff was amazing, they handled him so well. His anxiety was not very high, I believe it was due to their wonderful staff!! I pray his adoption journey is a quick one!!

Can you imagine how miserable my cat would have been if she had actually gone three whole days without pain meds?! You try waking up from an open abdomen surgery where your reproductive organs are retrieved with a spay hook, tied off and cut out. Can you imagine recovering from that without any pain control?! Thank goodness I was able to get her meds elsewhere and she didn’t have to suffer. And side note, although neuters are less invasive, pain control for males should be at least recommended or offered. If owners decline it due to cost, then fine. But it’s still a surgical removal and male cats can and do feel discomfort following the procedure.I WILL say that the front desk staff were very friendly and welcoming, despite being very obviously busy. What a wonderful place!! The people there truly love animals! The loving furry friends all want to make you happy and bring you smiles and joy into your life. If you feel like you need some joy and laughter from a true friend who will always be so overjoyed to see you that their whole body wags, or their heart purrs, definitely ADOPT! :)It's the best feeling in the world. Just be sure that you have the proper home/yard/space and funds to properly care for your new best friend. You don't need a kitten or puppy, adult and elder pets are just as cute, plus they are already trained and you don't have to worry about them chewing everything, piddling on the floor or other puppy and kitten issues. ADOPT TODAY! Your best friend could be waiting!!

I loved the way they took care of the animals. I know the cats have smaller cages, but they still let people open the cages to pet them. Although the cages for the dogs are made of concrete, they still supply food, toys, and a bed the make them feel comfortable. But the thing that surprises me the most, is how sweet and strong the employees are. If I worked there, I would cry every day seeing these poor animals wanting homes. 🐶🐱🐹🐰

Received a very pleasant welcome, asked if we were looking for a cat or dog and sent us into the building housing the dogs they had. Told us they were getting a shipment of rescued dogs the following say. All in all, a very pleasant visit.

Spotted a dog we were interested in and completed the pre adoption info online. They called us within an hour and made a same day appointment for a visit. The dog turned out to be good fit for us and we brought her home the same day.

We went there last night and was never greeted every one was standing around looking pissed off. when we asked questions they were rude. One nice dog walker told us she thought that they were expecting more dogs at the end of the week. I just called to ask if they really were the lady that answered the phone once again was extremely rude. I don't understand why they have people like that working there if your working with animals you should have people skills too. We got our Shepard mix there over 15 years ago and she has passed now we are looking to get another but I am really rethinking about going back. The only reason. I'm giving a 2 star is for the animals and the Nice dog walker lady. It all just left a bad taste in my mouth

I called today for information: And was able to talk with a delightful woman who was so helpful. Upon entering the shelter that same day, I found helpful caring people, that really cared about animals and it showed. Our Hayden community is really lucky to have each and every person there. And before I left I thanked & appreciated as many of them as I could.

Wonderful from the start. Zoey is a right fit for us. She's been a blessing. Thankful for her.

I adopted my sweet little girl Adanni but the whole process seemed a bit rushed. There was no yard photo check, or if you had another dog at home they didn't do a compatibility check. It all seemed very get your dog and get out of here. I still love my girl I am very happy with how sweet she is.

What an amazing organization. I am proud to say that they didn't have many pets in there which means they are getting them adopted out. This is a no kill shelter which elates me. I donate blankets and such at least once a month. They need a lot of leashes and such if you want to donate.

$110 charge to fix my pup. They add other charges on. My Rottweiler who weighs 88 lbs they called obese. She’s skinny just tall and huge, best part? They charge a $20 obese fee. Sickening what is happening to these places. If you need the money just ask, don’t add bs charges calling animals obese... should’ve spent the extra and taken her to her vet who she sees, and said she’s healthy weight. No more donations from this family!

Skyler Bond

Too many volunteers and not enough people knowing what they are doing. There should be one designated manager for a buyer to work with. Minus one star for, stressful, customer service. The facility was clean ,and the animals were too! The paper work was very detailed, and the people in the back, who care for the animals, are very conscientious, knowledgable, and rightfully protective of the animals as the goal is to find them good homes! Continue to donate: beds, collars, leashes, food they need it all!

We adopted our spunky kitten/cat Emory over a year ago from KHS, and he's been amazing! Not only did the staff help me make an informed decision, they gave me time to visit and play with several cats to help me see personalities come out. Emory has not only become an important part of our family, but has been a wonderful companion to our female cat Poeony.( She was very shy from being abused, severely underweight and neglected before we adopted her.) We rescued her while living in Texas. Some how Emory brought our Peony out of her shyness and she's immediately become his doting cat auntie. Emory also gets along with our elderly dog. Thank you to Kootenai Humane Society! You are awesome!

The lady and gentleman that I was talking to were very rude and unthoughtful. Showed up and saw my kitty that I had been missing and it was on hold to be adopted that afternoon. I said his name and he came right up the the edge of the cage and started purring and licking me like he always does. He looked exactly like my kitty as well. Although None of my pictures showed his stomach enough to prove he had a white spot they told me it wasn't my cat. They said it's not my cat and he was already being adopted so I couldn't take him. She then just walked off rudely. Now my other kitties heart is broken because her brother is gone, as well as mine..

3rd time adopting a kitty. Staff is friendly and loves their animals. They make the adoption process smooth and simple and assist you in the early care of your new pet. They love to see photos of as your new furry friend grows.

I’d give - 5 if I could. Staff was extremely rude and not helpful at all. Very upsetting. I’d like to know who is responsible for maintaining a friendly helpful staff because today was definitely a huge FAIL! Really don’t see myself going there again to be treated so unimportant. Probably have more fur babies adopted if the staff was more welcoming, kind and helpful. Breaks my heart.

Just from a phone call I got treated rudely. I called to see if there was any available appointments and/or to possibly make one. Please checkout their website first as paperwork to be approved and make an appt. is protocol. Which is fine. But telling me this info with a helpful and a professional manner/tone totally would of helped. I wouldn't of been taken back by the tone used to tell me important information. This could detour people from wanting to visit this place. It's unfortunate as it's where animals are in need of a forever heart and home.I understand and respect this is not an easy job. But don't take it out on people that could potentially rescue an animal. It's not fair to the animal, the organization it stands for or the person you snapped at. I support adopting and rescuing animals. So for the animals sake we will try this place again. Thankful they are a no kill shelter. I like to support locals but if this doesn't work out. Sandpoint shelter here we come.

This Humane Society is a mixed bag. We got a kitten there four years ago and she is pretty cute. But lately we’ve been back to visit and they have what we call the “handwashing Nazi”. This woman literally follows you around to make sure that you wash your hands in between petting each of the animals. I seriously was not as concerned about either one of my infants as a new mom. It’s hard to believe that cats are less resilient to germs than neonates.

When I picked a boy to meet with, the staff told me he wouldn't be a good dog to get because "he doesn't like people." And i told them to humor me and I'd like to meet him anyways, when we met he was very sweet and ever let me hold him for several minutes doing just fine. I have a small female who needs a buddy which is why I came to the shelter, on this boys chart it says he doesn't get along with male dogs. The staff told me "he doesn't like dogs either, hell fight your dog." Which i told them my dog is a female and his chart says he doesn't like males and to humor me again, when I was holding him and had a friend holding my dog to have them meet ( which is NOT the correct way to have dogs meet for the first time, but the only way the staff would let them) the staff member pulled on his leash, choking him and made him freak out and nip at me,then they told me he didnt like my dog. This shelter needs to either hire staff with experience or train their staff on how to work with dogs because this was a horrible experience and now this boy is still in the shelter because of the staff.

Great place to find a pet for yourself or as a gift.Great staff & volunteers there that truly Love Animals & I've personally seen them interact with stubborn animals with a kindhearted touch. They also help those on fixed income, or short on funds with some services. They also give pet food to the less fortunate once a month free. All I can say is WELL DONEKOOTENAI HUMANE SOCIETY!6 stars out of 5 for you ALL out there!!!I've adopted a few pets from them for friends & Always found something that worked out great!
Anna Johnson
The animals here are so we'll treated and they make sure that the family buying the pet has some experience or back round knowledge of the animal. The only problem is that sometimes a few volenteeri can be a bit rude but most of them are the best people you will ever have the pleasure or meeting.
Emelyn Hopkins
We adopted a kitten from the humane society. They were all very helpful with seeing cats, letting us in the visiting room, and holding cats. It seemed fairly clean, but an old building, they have a no kill policy which is wonderful.

Looking at the adoption questionnaire and the process outlined on the website, no thank you. Way too intrusive in terms of personal information they require. And, too many rules about looking at a potential pet. Big brother to the max.

I brought in some items to donate after my elderly cat died this Christmas. The woman I interacted with was very rude and condescending when I brought the items in and showed no appreciation or empathy for the situation. When I am ready to adopt again I do not believe it will be with this shelter. People skills are just as important as pet skills.

Nice shelter. Not a huge selection of dogs. From when I went they definitely had way more cats. They have a really nice place for dogs to run around outsiide and get to know you. Will be checking back frequently...

Spay went well and I was 20 mins late. They don't give u a cone for their aftercare. I assumed that would be included. She didn't lick a bunch thank God! But it took a full day for her to eat after the surgery . A week to not flinch when I'd touch her belly. And 2 weeks to heal.

My boyfriend and I had adopted an elderly male Shiba Inu here, and the staff was very, very nice. When we had first looked at our boy, he had yet to be neutered, but the walker let us walk with him and the Shiba anyway even though it was our boy's second walk.I look here first to get an animal.

The shelter redeemed itself today! I've had good days and not so good days there. I was given extra help after struggling to find my forever friend and today, we found each other. So, thank you KHS, and Michelle.

Went to adopt a dog on the 5th, the girl at the front,Cassie was very short and rude when I tried to ask about the dog and talked very rudely to another front desk worker about a customer on the phone. Finally got some answers about what we needed to do and we were told it would be a few days for him to get fixed which was ok, got a call on the 8th and were told we could pick him up in four days so we went in on Monday and a very rude girl Cassie told us he hadn’t even been fixed yet so it would be awhile longer we were upset by the lack of communication and lack of basic human decency by this front desk worker. So I called to see if I could get a basic time frame so I could schedule it at work and the girl on the phone kept cutting me off when I would ask a question and made it clear she would not give me any kind of update or time frame on when we could get him and said he would not be fixed until Thursday 15 and when I tried to say ok she cut me off again clearly not wanting to help at all. Then we received a call today Tuesday saying he was ready to go and apparently he had been fixed since Friday the 9th. So we have him now but are very disappointed with the way the one girl acted towards people there. The one star on here is only for the very sweet and caring people that were there when my husband got him. Cassie should however be fired or retrained.

Got our fur babies here. Thank you Mary

Great people, excited to work with you and absolutely committed to their animals.
Diane Wahl
Wonderful caring staff. Such a great service they provide by vaccinating animals at such a discount and it came with a Vet check!
Nichole Thiel

Jacques Croom
3rd time adopting a kitty. Staff is friendly and loves their animals. They make the adoption process smooth and simple and assist you in the early care of your new pet. They love to see photos of as your new furry friend grows.
Natalie
I’d give - 5 if I could. Staff was extremely rude and not helpful at all. Very upsetting. I’d like to know who is responsible for maintaining a friendly helpful staff because today was definitely a huge FAIL! Really don’t see myself going there again to be treated so unimportant. Probably have more fur babies adopted if the staff was more welcoming, kind and helpful. Breaks my heart.
Taunya Scrivens

Joseph Robinson
Amazing place!! They are truly all about the cate and wellbeing of their animals. Our helper was very nice and gave us the space to truly find the kitten our family wanted.
Amber Farthing
They are very sweet and they took care my dog.
Nikki Rands
There is not enough support for this place and it's mission. The staff care so much about their roles in these animal's lives and it shows. They take such good care and show compassion without judging circumstances. Please look here first when searching for a pet.
Marcie Taylor
No kill shelter. Feral cat trap rental available, fee refunded upon trap return. Cat is neutered/fixed, ear tipped, given rabies shot, and returned to you for release in your neighborhood all for $15.
Randy Tetzner
Helped out great with neutering a cat with undescended testicle (no extra charge) great vets! They could do a lot better with people who are forced to catch feral cats but can't afford animal drop off fees, cats carry Pasteurella bacteria which can result in limb loss if your bit and don't get medical treatment ASAP, so feral cats are major health hazards (they bite more than the avgerage pet cat) that we citizens are expected to pay for 100% Killing these cats is not the answer. Putting out anti-freeze is cruel as my children watched their cat die and euthanized at the vet. They should have a better established free drop off for feral cats to be spayed and neutered and given out at low cost as barn cats which reduces rodent populations. Remember overkilling of cats in the middle ages led to increase rodent populations which carries the flea for bubonic plague. Yeah pay for on ounce of prevention. STOP making us pay for a pound of prevention.
Brianna Newman
They are great with pet I always want to get one every time I go in there. So many pretty animals. Makes me want to keep all of them
Robin Bessey
They work hard to ensure every pet is placed in a good home. They do allow returns or exchanges when it's a poor fit. They take good care of these animals.
Ashley “Leilani” Ziel
I like that you get one hour to spend time with the animal your interested in. It is also great that they spay/neuter all the animals and give them initial vaccinations
Daniel Umland
Rude staff. Wouldn't let us interact with a fog because we weren't sure if we were going to adopt it. Well... how are you supposed to know without meeting the dog out of a cage. Very rude brunette women at front counter. Quite a C word
Thomas Staples
My daughter and I stopped in to visit the animals. The staff was friendly. The facility was clean. The animals were well taken care of. It was the best possible situation for animals that need care. Thanks!
Stephanie Duley
They were so caring and helpful.
Daniel Clark
Looking at the adoption questionnaire and the process outlined on the website, no thank you. Way too intrusive in terms of personal information they require. And, too many rules about looking at a potential pet. Big brother to the max.
Megan Jasso
I brought in some items to donate after my elderly cat died this Christmas. The woman I interacted with was very rude and condescending when I brought the items in and showed no appreciation or empathy for the situation. When I am ready to adopt again I do not believe it will be with this shelter. People skills are just as important as pet skills.
Carrol Morino
Great experience and great price for spay surgery. My little cat is doing well, and her incision was beautifully closed and healed quickly.
Amanda Albert
Adopted a three-year-old gray tabby paid $50 and he was able to get neutered and chiped and I get a free that visit when schedule the first 24 to 48 hours after adopted for a wellness checkup people hear amazing super sweet.
Linda and Jim Maxwell
They were great. They returned my call about a chihuahua. I went right away and Got Grace. She a puppy and the price for all that was included was very reasonable. They were very nice.
G P
Nice shelter. Not a huge selection of dogs. From when I went they definitely had way more cats. They have a really nice place for dogs to run around outsiide and get to know you. Will be checking back frequently...
Heather Cox
Spay went well and I was 20 mins late. They don't give u a cone for their aftercare. I assumed that would be included. She didn't lick a bunch thank God! But it took a full day for her to eat after the surgery . A week to not flinch when I'd touch her belly. And 2 weeks to heal.
Koleen Harden
My Jackson Harden-Bunting is A O KAY he is doing good had surgery today this morning 🌄 🙌 he is wonderful kitty Jackson 5 he is the best kitten in universe ask Candice Marie Harden and James Bryan Harden we are a Trust ONE kind of family with Cleo Bunting too!
rebecca pearson
They were the only place to help a dying Chihuahua. They took him in for his safety and comfort. Poor boy was put to sleep today due to all his injuries. God bless these people.
Tory Galloway
These guys took very good care of my animal and the others that were there as well. Highly recommend for shots, chips and getting animals fixed
Tianna Walker
Everyone was very nice and helpful and they helped us get everything ready for our little boy. The lady at the front desk was the only one who we both felt was super rude.
Mike Leach
They do a great job with what they've got.
Alison Fortress
Had some barn kittens that needed to be rehome. They made it a positive and painless experience. Thankyou so much for your caring and professional response.
Lea Anne Lund
They are so caring to the animals and give so much love! I went to donate towels, which they can always use. Please donate to your local Humane Society.
Krystal Fortier (Krissie)
Have always done great with any of our fury friend needs.
Teri Netzer

Cara Peek Spraggins
They are a non kill shelter, and not only help animals they house, but expand thier services throughout the community offering low income familys spay and neuter options at an affordable price with voucher.

Super clean, busy place where the animals are priority one. Staff was helpful and friendly. Granddaughter and I was able to send time with a couple of kittens thanks to the understanding staff.
John Gilbertson
ALLWAYS a great place to adopt a new dog. I just wish they had more puppies. But, we got a real sweet lab mix for a friend for my Lucy dog.
Lumynn The awesome mom
I don't know if they were busy or the lady I was talking to had a bad day but first impression is everything. The person I talk to was rude and sounded annoyed by my question about adopting a dog. Then when I tried to ask another question she hung up on me. I wish I got her name so I know who not to deal with when I adopt fr there.

Although we couldn't go in. The yard was imaculant and so many different yards. The cats that were spayed had no problems in recovery.
Benjamin Tullis
Great shelter, some of the dogs werent marked so we couldn't tell if they were ready for adoption. Otherwise it was a great day.
Ron Garrett
What a beautiful facility, so clean, so nice. I urge for everyone that can go visit, donate your time and money if possible.

Great place! Friendly and helpful people! I even got a free rooster!! He fits in great on our farm! Glad I went there!
Chrissy Bassiri
I got my cat here and it was a very good experience. Great, helpful, and sweet staff, and they obviously care for their animals.
Hattie Huybregts
Staff was not friendly and extremely rude. I was cut off in the middle of my sentences and could barely ask any questions before being interrupted. Very unprofessional. Staff all looked unhappy to be working.
Ember Jewels
They were very nice and I can tell that they try there best to get the animals adopted. They definitely deserve any donation they get.
Kellie Jensen
We adopted Jake about a week ago and what a lil stinker he is, he took right to the other furbabies and he loves his new mom who got him as a 7th birthday present.
