Customer Reviews Summary
The reviews for Evergreen Cemetery reveal a stark contrast between its historical significance and its current state of neglect. Many visitors express deep disappointment over the unkempt grounds, lack of maintenance, and poor customer service. While some appreciate the cemetery's history and the peaceful atmosphere, the overwhelming sentiment is one of frustration regarding the disrespect shown to the deceased and their families.

Literally just left chopped trees on people graves, and it’s so dry, don’t bury your loved ones here, it’s very disrespectful and they don’t careEdit: There are broken tombstone and my brothers tombstone had tires marks on it

In 1926 a haunting was investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department, strange voices coming from the cemetey. As it turns out a speak easy was being operated at the park serving alcohol during proibition. The cemetery is much quiter on this rainny day.

This cemetery does not honor the deceased at all. Cemetery is in terrible condition. There is no grass. Headstones have been severely neglected. I would never bury a loved one here. It is ashamed that the dead have to buried and their resting places look like the slum of this area that this place is in. I wish there was legal action that could be taken.

I had the opportunity to visit the Evergreen Cemetery this past weekend. What an experience. I spent hours photographing the site, so much history to record. I wish they would restore the chapel. I differently will come back on a foggy day.

Of the more than 16 million Americans who served this country in WW2, the Medal of Honor was bestowed on only 472. Of these, 5 are buried in this cemetery. I think we owe them a better resting place than the dried grass and dead trees shown in these images.

Very large cemetery. Well kept and full of history. If you enjoy seeing old gravestones or want a nice quiet place to walk and enjoy looking at history, I would recommend a visit.

My Brother is buried there need to remind worker to cut the grave side grass place has grass bc of all the rain we got in the winter not bc they take care of it, can't leave decorations bc they will steal them and beside that my mom and sister purses where stole there too. Ghetto people where stupid enough to go to near by store to shop with stolen card Police was called, cemetery personal don't do nothing that it's not there responsibility not even for the decorations people steal from there. Lesson learned for us next time we go we take nothing with us just flower for my bro ❤️ be careful it's a crazy world we live in 😒

I do not understand why this cemetery is NOT well kept. Every time I come to visit my mother-n-law, we water her and her surrounding neighbors. We try our best to keep her plot clean. Please do better. As the family, we don’t deserve this. For our dead loved ones, They don’t deserve this. These photos were taken this Mother’s Day. It’s so upsetting to see this place like this... it really just tells me you don’t care. Please do better. 🙇🏻♀️

I talked to the people there on the phone. They were very nonchalant and uncaring about the prices that they were charging, telling me they only had double plots, but we could bury our loved one and a double and still will be charged the double plot price. This price gouging is unbearable just to bury your loved ones. That is why I’m going to call the Better Business Bureau and report this place. And they say they have been doing this for the last two years. And for what because of when Covid hit? You were trying to rip honest, hard-working people who don’t have a lot of money to bury their loved ones and it is not right .

The upkeep of the grounds is horrible. It doesn't seem like they take care of this place like they used to. if the grass is cut the debris is left covering up tombstones. You have to clean and pull the weeds yourself. Believe it or not my father's stone is underneath this.

On March 2nd 2024, we had a funeral here in the chapel. However, someone was stealing bags from our car parked right next to the chapel. How could he think of stealing when it was raining?Beware of thieves when you come here.

2023: They should change the name to "Everbrown" Cemetary. The only green plants are weeds and crabgrass. Lots of nice dirt, though...Update: May 26, 2024---- some parts of the cemetery now look completely void of headstones because the grass and weeds have grown over everything. It took us half an hour to locate our grandmother's grave. NO maintenance is being done! AND, when you call the office to ask about their hours, don't believe what you hear: got two different stories from two different people.

This was such a beautiful cemetery back in the day .The owners of today , whom ever they are . Have no respect or reverence for the dead buried there or their families . People that have loved ones buried there should sue this cemetery’s owners BECAUSE one of the things the family / purchaser is charged for is UP KEEP of the plot and as you can see NONE of the plots are kept which means , that the entire cemetery is UNKEPT . WHICH MEANS , BREACH OF CONTRACT PER THE WRITTEN “ LEGAL BINDING “ DOCUMENTS THAT WERE PRESENTED BY THE CEMETERY TO THE FAMILY FOR THEIR SIGNATURE AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE .

Me and my family have been going there every Memorial Day to leave flowers for our departed relatives who first arrived in the U.S.A. in the late 1800.Saying that, given a choice, I wouldn't want to be buried there. It's in a less then ideal area and they don't maintain the location very well. The grass is usually dead, some of the water faucets are right in or next to old grave sites (I even heard years ago the water faucets eventually broke some graves open revealing the dead body inside) and some of the grave stones had graffiti on them, including on the back of my great-grandpa's gravestone.

It's been a little over a year since I have been here to place flowers on my Grandparent's grave sight and I just couldn't believe how unkempt this cemetery has become. It's like they don't even bother watering the the grass anymore. It was all dead and brown. Not acceptable for this type of establishment!!! They don't even deserve the 1 star, but unfortunately, you have to choose something.
Lori Mawson
This cemetery looks horrible! The grass has been brown for about 5 years now. They used to blame it on the drought and that water had to be conserved, but we haven't been in a drought for about 3 years. The only time this place is watered is when it rains. I am sad that we chose this resting place for our family members and that their remains are here in this disgusting looking cemetery.
Darrell Bowens
I was so saddened to see the condition of the grounds keeping. It's more clay than grass. To know some of our greatest people are resting in this state of decay is sad. Eddie Anderson lived a wonderful life and paved the way for many African Americans and yet to see the way his grave looked isn't fair for our deeply loved departed. I heard there are new owners, I hope they can renew it to the beauty the people resting deserve.

Beautiful cemetery, large, with nice roads, chapel, & stand up headstones. Some areas not level, wear appropriate shoes. Some street vendors sell flowers nearby. You may need a map/directions if you don't know where a grave is located.Best to lock your car to be safe when you park at graveside.

Interesting fact... Evergreen Cemetery is the first cemetery in Los Angeles that allowed people of color to be buried there. There are two generations of my family buried there. The previous owners ran the cemetery into the ground literally. My father and I worked to clean up the area as did other families. The new owner got stuck with decaying plumbing and the terrible grounds. It appeared they were attempting to fix the place up. Due to the lock down, I have been unable to water the grass around the two rows where my family is buried. The owners didn't water at all... I went today only to discover whoever mowed the weeds left a huge pile of weeds where grass is growing. I had to hand rake them so I could water.
Octavio Akiyama
I mean... It's a cemetery. Not sure how much you can say about a place like this. My family is buried here and as far as I know, they're still there. The entrance is a bit narrow but that's not much of a complaint. Is this a good place to be buried? Maybe, but you'd have to ask the people here.

Graves are supposed to face the east. This is due to the fact that the sun rises in the east so every morning as the sun rises, it also allows visitors to see the names on the graves. As the sun moves over the graves and behind them the cemetery s hours of service also pass and soon after it is closed just before sunset. In this particular memorial park the graves face any random direction.

Big, packed tight, historical landmark cemetery just east of the heart of downtown L.A. Many burials date to at least the 1870s. In addition to noted L.A. personalities of the past, burials include large sections of Japanese and Armenians. Mostly reasonably well maintained grounds. Knowledgeable and helpful staff at cemetery office on site.

Cemetery is unkept, grass is dry. If you want green grass you need to take your own water hose. Cost of buying a plot there is not any less than other cemeteries where the grounds keepers maintain a beautiful green lawn.

My parents and grandparents are buried at Evergreen Cemetery. It's looking much better compared to several years ago. The grass is greener and well trimmed. The water cans for flowers are back filled with debris and were unusable.

Evergreen handled my Grandmother and Mother's Crematorium and it really changed things. They picked up the bodies and the death certificates which made their passing more tolerable of the paper pushing services. They even made an arrangement for family to do a viewing that never got to say good byes because of their health issues. I plan on having them handle me and my wives crematorium matters. Thank you for all you offer and do.

The stupid New owner order his workers to throw all the flowers away. Even if they are fresh flowers ... It happens to me once I took some flowers to my grandmother and the next day they were thrown away ...

Im upset. I drove for 30mins because google adresss website said open today- till 4pm Sunday.I tried to call before hand. Rings no anwering service message that would be helpful. So i get here and on the gate says closed due to covid-19.There are vehicles parked by office. And maintenance is on grounds working. No one answers the phone, several other people showed up. As to there surprise as well/ no one is able to enter.Poor customer relations!!!

Prices are cheap however the grounds are not well maintained the grass is almost gone in some areas they restrict the water use. There are areas where people decorate and their things are not removed i have decorated our family member plot and our things have been removed. It seems like only that specifoc cluster gets cleaned and allowed to keep decorations. Rhe surroundign tombstones around our family members area are really old and almost tiping over. I would not buy a space here unless i was looking for somehing cheap

This place needs to be taken care of a bit better. It's mainly dirt. Pretty sad. The only nice area is by the entrance or near the very back. Pretty sad.

I never knew about this cemetery until my grandma was buried here. I can't say there is another place quite like it. It's Beautiful even though the grass is completely dead.

History!!! This car has been parked in that one spot so long that there are cobwebs going from its front bumper to the ground.

I am giving this one star because I have to in order to write my review. I was appalled and disgusted when during my mom's burial, the two bozos lowering the casket, dropped the front of the casket and everyone's face was just frozen in space thinking what just happened! I couldn't believe how careless and stupid these guys were. Not an apology from them. The woman director there just said she was sorry after I approached her to complain. What a horrible experience. I don't wish that upon anyone.

Super old school a lot of family is there looks like a scene from an old movie in fact last time I was there NCIS was filming the part of an episode in the cemetery because it is so old most of the gravesite and tombstones are standing up and they are huge monuments quite interesting as opposed to how they do it these days not in the best part of town but if someone you love resides there regardless it's someone you love

Historical place with a nice view of LA skyline. Lots of old head stones and Statues. Several key people that developed Los Angeles buried there.

Needs more time and care of the lawn which is slowly getting better I've seen Hollywood or filming crew inside doing some kind of movie? But it's been filmed by the making of mask with Cher.

It was really sad seeing this place is not kepted up. There was no grass just dirt and weeds. Rose Hills, Inglewood and Forstlawn has green grass, shame on this cemetery. The country should be called on this place...Sad

Small quaint cemetery and not too crowded. Also a great chance to see the Japanese Americans that fought for our country. May they rest in peace.

Super Dry !!!!! No grass on my great grandmas grave area. It's heartbreaking to visit and see that no water is used and that the plots look uncared for. My parents have to come clean her stone and management seems to not care.

Very interesting place to visit. There's a tremendous amount of history in the cemetery. Buried here are a number of notable figures from all backgrounds and walks of life who played roles in the rich history and development of the Los Angeles area.If you are interested in the internment / incarceration of Japanese-Americans during World War II, there are several notable names related to this Cemetery. David Ono has a documentary regarding the number of Japanese Americans soldiers buried here including those who served in the 100th/442nd, including 4 of whom are Medal of Honor recipients, including Sadao S. Munemori. Also interred here is supposedly Toyo Miyatake, who is well known for his photographic documentary of life within the Manzanar Internment camp. The diversity within the cemetery reflects many of the ethnicities, cultures, religions, groups of people, and individuals that it took it to develop Los Angeles into the city it is today. Although the cemetery is not the glamorous landmark by any means, hopefully it can serve to remind us of where we've come from, the challenges those who have come before us had to overcome, helps to ensure that we do not repeat the mistakes of the past, and that we move forward into the future as a stronger more unified community.
Felipe Bardales
It was my first time being there for a sad reason obviously, but I saw that most of the property is just dried grass everywhere. You can tell that the property owner doesn't care about the visual concept. I would not bury a relative Here. I would chose somewhere where theres more greenery.
Inferno Skilz
What is there to say? I'm not sure why Google maps thinks I visit places when I just pass by them. But I came here back in 5th grade in 2007 I think, not sure. I don't know? The grave stones should be cleaned up instead of being soo old?
Sharon Smith
Very disappointed 😞 this cemetery i rate an F grade. I wish we would have never layed our mother there as her resting place. Such a disgrace.
Kenneth Owenz
Registry doesn't have my grandparents listed. Went to see my g/pa on his heavenly birthday.. So~ disappointed
Nick Cotrufo
Evergreen handled my Grandmother and Mother's Crematorium and it really changed things. They picked up the bodies and the death certificates which made their passing more tolerable of the paper pushing services. They even made an arrangement for family to do a viewing that never got to say good byes because of their health issues. I plan on having them handle me and my wives crematorium matters. Thank you for all you offer and do.
Edgar1 Edgar
The stupid New owner order his workers to throw all the flowers away. Even if they are fresh flowers ... It happens to me once I took some flowers to my grandmother and the next day they were thrown away ...
Mayra Ochoa
I love how clean cut they have my Nanas grave
Victoria 2022 Adventures
Jazmin Araujo
Prices are cheap however the grounds are not well maintained the grass is almost gone in some areas they restrict the water use. There are areas where people decorate and their things are not removed i have decorated our family member plot and our things have been removed. It seems like only that specifoc cluster gets cleaned and allowed to keep decorations. Rhe surroundign tombstones around our family members area are really old and almost tiping over. I would not buy a space here unless i was looking for somehing cheap
Jo Ca
This place needs to be taken care of a bit better. It's mainly dirt. Pretty sad. The only nice area is by the entrance or near the very back. Pretty sad.
Brandon Santillan
I never knew about this cemetery until my grandma was buried here. I can't say there is another place quite like it. It's Beautiful even though the grass is completely dead.
Eva Eriksen
This cemeterys amazing! Huge, with many late Angelinos of all races buried here. Too bad they don't water the grounds, if they did, this cemetery would be beautiful!
Bob Marlowe
History!!! This car has been parked in that one spot so long that there are cobwebs going from its front bumper to the ground.
Rebecca Garcia
Every time I visit my mother's grave I get very sad just by seeing how here grave looks it seems as they never clean. The grass is very dry. I regret so much not putting her on another cemetery.
Darosa De Sousa
Beautiful cemetery , very helpful staff and reasonable price, good services, the Grass is greener than before but definitely need more more water , keep it up please
Gloria Rodriguez
No grass looks like hay not kept up. Would not recommend this cemetery to anyone. Can't even find my mother in law stone.
Cee Marie33 (Ceemarie33)
Beware a pack of coyotes live at this cemetery killing local dogs and cats. If you visit make sure you dont bring any food, children or pets with you.
Benjamin Stafford
It's a cemetery! A very old one. How can you rate it? No, it is not pretty nor is the landscape. A historic place. It's been around a very long time.
faze Armani
Been coming since i was 3 or 4. When my first sister past. My 2nd sis past when i was 21. Im 27 and im going today.

I went to a close friends funeral today, and was totally disappointed and embarrassed! The grass was so dryed up, and unkeeped. They were fined and seized by the
Stephanie Tanaka Chang
Peaceful, grass was a little dry but it looked like there were some new sprinklers put in. What was annoying was that they were filming and I had to park farther away and it was difficult for my Mom to walk to the gravesite
Petina Thomas
Went here with my friend to vist her Nana and we got lost. The staff helped us locate her and we were able to find her.
Gregory Williams
Had a wonderful time the Browns were very well care I was amazed cuz it's been over 20 years since I last visited but they're doing an excellent job keeping things together that's why I gave him five stars that's all you can give and that's real caring proud of you Evergreen
Arax Kl
I am giving this one star because I have to in order to write my review. I was appalled and disgusted when during my mom's burial, the two bozos lowering the casket, dropped the front of the casket and everyone's face was just frozen in space thinking what just happened! I couldn't believe how careless and stupid these guys were. Not an apology from them. The woman director there just said she was sorry after I approached her to complain. What a horrible experience. I don't wish that upon anyone.
Jennifer Simonian
Super old school a lot of family is there looks like a scene from an old movie in fact last time I was there NCIS was filming the part of an episode in the cemetery because it is so old most of the gravesite and tombstones are standing up and they are huge monuments quite interesting as opposed to how they do it these days not in the best part of town but if someone you love resides there regardless it's someone you love
Leo Rubio
Historical place with a nice view of LA skyline. Lots of old head stones and Statues. Several key people that developed Los Angeles buried there.
sylvia martinez
My grandson is buried here and they dont mind if i water the grass in the whoe area. Sometimes i spend hours there just relaxing. Great peaceful place!
Bluecloud Blueheart
I went to visit my grandparents & aunts grave. Very sad to see the grass really high not maintained. I hope next time I go is better. Extremely sad 😥
Ralph navarre
Needs more time and care of the lawn which is slowly getting better I've seen Hollywood or filming crew inside doing some kind of movie? But it's been filmed by the making of mask with Cher.
Kool Kay
It was really sad seeing this place is not kepted up. There was no grass just dirt and weeds. Rose Hills, Inglewood and Forstlawn has green grass, shame on this cemetery. The country should be called on this place...Sad
Ben Evardome
Small quaint cemetery and not too crowded. Also a great chance to see the Japanese Americans that fought for our country. May they rest in peace.
C R
I love being able to spent time with my bestie after all these years its is kept clean and the workers there are very helpful ,once your inside and they're about to close they sometimes let you stay a little longer in you just got there.
Ishmael Garcia (Fishman)
If you're ever here for an Anthropology research project there's a diverse set of data you can gather. (I know its weird to be writing this)
Lawrence Shields
Should be called Everbrown . It seems that the only time the area gets watered is when it rains! Weeds everywhere. Also, some people steal the flower cups that are placed at the grave sites. Sad and pathetic !
Aaron Schultz
Staff were extremely rude to me when I called. They hung up on me as well. Don't waste your time here.
Javier Magdaleno
When I got there..( everyone was dead)... that's good we don't need them walking around...😵😵😵✌❤
Cole Jenkins
Mouldering historic cemetery, that looks like a cemetery ought to. Apparently they are currently dealing with a grass blight, but that's a feature in my opinion, not a bug.
D R
So much history, good n bad. LAs finest architects, rebels and historic legends lie here.

The cemetery is starting to look nice is looking more green. They need to water the grass more.

Good area. Serene. Would like better weekend staff to assist with grave location as well as Holiday 😊
Veronica Lopez
It's poorly maintained, would look nice if grass was greener. I see people that visit their loved ones watering the grass themselves.
Sonia/David Romero
Super Dry !!!!! No grass on my great grandmas grave area. It's heartbreaking to visit and see that no water is used and that the plots look uncared for. My parents have to come clean her stone and management seems to not care.
Jess Contreras
It's a somewhat cheap and old cementary .. they just got new owners so there might be some few changes. My uncle and grandpa are here.. the staff is nice and helpful and it's nice and quiet.
Susie Paramo
Not so sure about this rating, it's a cemetery. Don't usually expect much. Well kept, and the few times I've needed help they've been pretty nice.
Fernando “MR. SHARKY” Hernandez
Rest in peace Aunt Vivian I love you and Grandma Gloria Becker all I have now is my mom and my aunt rose Jack is gone and Uncle herb is gone from Eastside Clover gang tiny Jokers RIP to my people and the ones who I ever known thank you
