Interesting history. I think it's awesome for people to memorialize these dogs that had so much impact on their lives. This place embodies the love, impact, and pride for these dogs. There is a guestbook to sign, benches around the cemetery to sit, and a covered seating area. Be aware that there is very little to no cell coverage in this area.

Oh my heart. I am so glad that I was able to see this beautiful place. The tears flowed.

I shed tears within moments of walking through the memorials to these beloved pets. Dug through my car for all change I had to continue the tradition of leaving tokens of respect via coins, and even the 901 painted rock I kept in my car. A loving a moving place full of warm and tender vibes, very fitting for a place devoted to the loyal friendship between dogs and mankind.

What a great tribute to some of man's best friends. Set way out in the hills this quiet memorial to full purebred coon dogs displays the love the owners had for their friends. This roadside attraction has an outbuilding on a concrete base as well as benches to sit on to take in the peacefulness. Each grave has a marker and some colorful plastic flowers that spread out over the grounds making it a beautiful sight. There is a guestbook to sign and most days it seems that a few visits are made.

Such an eerie place at night, but still neat to see something so unique. It's a pretty good drive from the highway...about 4-5 miles. It's located in a very beautiful area of Alabama, too. Surrounded by hills, trees, and wildlife. I was disappointed one of the statues had been vandalized, but it's still a sight worth seeing.

Anyone with a love for dogs will find this place interesting. But don't expect you can bury "FiFi" the poodle here. This is hollowed ground for Coon Dogs only. I love bringing out-of-state visitors here. They never fail to really enjoy the trip to this special spot and are impressed with the creativity and beauty of the various head stones. And it doesn't cost a dime! There is no staff or host here. It is very isolated. No facilities except an old time "out house" which may or may not have paper but will certainly have a stink.

Interesting Place. The day we visited a family was having a picnic here. That's real love for a coon dog. They said that several of their champion dogs were buried there. One of the kids pointed out their grave sites. We spent maybe 20min taking pictures and admiring peoples love for their dogs.

Went because we had nothing better to do bur for reasons I can't explain I'm glad we did.Something to see a tribute to a dog breed.

This place is well worth the drive. Even if you may not be a dog lover, this is a quiet place to reflect on lost loved ones of all species.

In Alabama, we stopped to visit the world’s only Coon Dog Cemetery. There were over a hundred gravesites of coon dogs. The first, Troop, was buried in 1937 and the most recent one we saw was 1999. Quite a variety of both names and grave markers. Some made professionally in marble and granite, others were pieces of wood with an epitaph painted on, and still some were chunks of rock or cement with words of affection carved in. Troop, Old Blue, Ruff, Moma, Queen, Track, and my personal favorite Dr. Doom were among the deceased. This stop was quite a find, well worth going 20 miles out of our way to see.

Great piece of history! Make sure you bring plenty of pennies!

Very interesting. I enjoyed seeing these beloved pets honored in such a tender way.

If you are a pet person you will love this place. We were staying at Joe Wheeler state park and drove over, a little over an hour drive and so worth it. Big, fancy head markers or simple sticks with the dog’s collar on it, dogs from as far away as Michigan are buried there. And each grave has a small bouquet of flowers…the simplest grave with just a rock marker had the same bouquet as the expensive marble headstones. So sweet! Go there!!

It's definitely off the beaten path but really interesting
Shirley Fielder-Jacobs
Interesting...out in the woods there's this place to honor coon dogs.

Health issues have prevented my wife and I from enjoying the Labor day celebration at the coon dog cemetery. We both look forward to being there Monday. The music is wonderful, the food is good, and there's something for everyone to enjoy. Hope to see you there!!!

Interesting place to make a quick visit. Well cared for cemetery and you can tell these people really loved their dogs. Unique headstones & markers. It’s the only coon dog cemetery in the world & it was even mentioned in the movie Sweet Home Alabama, although the real location was not part of the film. The first dog, Troop was buried here in 1937. We stopped here on our way to eat at the Rattlesnake Saloon that is nearby.
Marty Whitney
Definitely a must see if you are visiting the Red Bay area. This isn't just a dog cemetery - these were certified Coon Dogs of particular breeds. If you happen to be there for the Annual Labor Day celebration, it is very entertaining and crowded - get there and enjoy live entertainment, and bring a lawn chair to enjoy local bar b q and local crafts.
Susan Fuller
Interesting place to visit in north Alabama if you’re a dog lover or just a fan of unique places. Head over before or after a trip to the Rattlesnake Saloon. It’s only about 15 minutes away.

This is a real cemetery for champion coondogs. It is a bit out of the way, but the area is very well maintained. I pictured a walk into the woods and a few gravestones. In reality there are hundreds of well taken care of grave sites and several excellent sculptures. The signage on the way there made the way extremely clear. If you didn't have GPS or Google Maps on your phone you could still get here off of HWY 72 by signs alone. I was glad to have visited this place.
Ed Jones
Have been to the coondog cemetery many times . It's a quiet place to visit , peaceful setting anytime of the year . The festival is good , you meet folks from all over . It is located inside the freedom hills wildlife management area . I hunt there during the fall and winter . Great place to hunt too .
Brenden Mcpeek
Way off the beaten path. Worth visiting if you have ever enjoyed or shared the love of a good dog!

Mr. Key Underwood established this Cemetary in 1937 when he buried Troop, his hunting companion of 15 years. The site he chose was well known to local coon hunters. It wasn't his intention to start a Cemetary but that is what happened. The Cemetary is a national treasure-a one of a kind landmark. The location is beautiful any season of the year. No dog lover can visit and not experience a touch and tug on their heart. The pavilion is a good resting spot. Two outdoor privies serve as restrooms. The location is remote but safe. Caution is always a good companion. Autumn is a perfect time to visit. The drive is beautiful when fall colors are at peak.
Gera LeBlanc
It is a beautiful place for the best boys and girls to be laid to rest.

If you love dogs and in the area it is worth your time. Quiet peacefull place. Can almost hear the hounds baying.

Good luck finding the cemetery. Once you turn off the Hwy and drive the one mile to where the GPS said to go.... No sign what so ever. Did not want to walk on someone's property. Mad that we could not find it!
Melanie Moses
Only champion coon dogs are buried here. The headstones are interesting to read. Nice quiet place but a bit hard to find. Just keep on going when you think you had to have passed it.
